When I was three years old, my mom had me in the grocery cart while shopping. She said she turned her back for three seconds and I decided to belt "Amazing Grace" at the top of my lungs. While it was a little embarrassing, it pretty much is accurate representation of my personality. One, I love sining. Two, I love Jesus. Three, Music is my favorite form of worship. Christian music is the only music that has the ability to make me feel so unbelievably overwhelmed with the greatness of our God, that I can be covered in goosebumps, crying tears, or laughing out loud. While traditional church hymns are great, nothing beats contemporary christian music. So here is little list of my top favorites christian hymns.
1. "Sparrows" by Jason Grey
By far, the greatest song to listen to when you're feeling a bit anxious of overwhelmed. This song talks about the importance of remembering that God holds the whole world (even the sparrows) in his palms, so there's no need to worry.
2. "In Over My Head" by Jenn Johnson
I can't listen to this song without lifting my hands up to the Lord. While it starts out slow it builds to the one of the most powerful songs I have ever heard. It talks about us being so overwhelmed in the greatness of God's love. One of my favorite lines is "Come and do what you want to. I'm standing knee deep but I'll never bend." God has this amazing plan for all of us, we just need to trust in his greatness.
3. "Christ is Risen" (Live Version) by Matt Maher
Ok, so this song fits perfectly during Easter but Jesus rises from the grave every day. He is so present in our world and this song is a great example of that. The live version has Matt Maher singing and speaking praise throughout the instrumental parts. This is by far one of my favorites.
4. "It is Well" by Bethel
Not only is this song beautiful but it holds one of my favorite quotes, "It is well with my soul." This song helps us recognize that even in our crazy life, everything is well because of God. Even when something gets in the way of our life, we have God to rely on.
5. "Speak Life" by Toby Mac
If you have never listened to Toby Mac, I highly recommend it. His songs are upbeat and catchy yet all hold a great message. This song talks about "speaking life" and lifting those around you up by speaking hope and love. At the end of the music video there is a quote that says, " In every encounter we either give life, or drain it. There is no neutral exchange."
6. "The God I Know" by Love and the Outcome
This song is great when you just need a song to explain how amazing God is. This song truly demonstrates the love God has for us. You will want to share this song with everyone once you hear it. My favorite line is "No strings attached when he saved my soul." His love for us is unconditional and when we recognize that, it is the best feeling in the world.
7. "Trust in You" by Lauren Daigle
This song is super catchy and great when you need a song to calm your nerves. It is all about trusting in the Lord with our entire life. He is the only person that knows what tomorrow brings and we can give every doubt and every worry to him. Sometimes his plan might not be what we expected, but we need to trust in him.
8. "Ever Be" by Aaron Shust
This is probably the most perfect wedding song ever, but also a great song that describes God's love for us. My favorite part is the second verse, "Free of all her guilt, rid of all her shame and known by her true name." This song gives me goosebumps because of the power of God's love for us.
9. "Carry My Soul" by Phil Wickham
I could listen to Phil Wickham's voice forever but this song is wonderful. It is about surrendering to God, and letting him take control of our lives. It encourages us to run into the arms of Christ.
10. "Touch the Sky" by Hillsong United
This song actually changed by life. It captures the power behind laying down your life and surrendering for God. "I found my life, when I laid it down." "I touched the sky, when my knees hit the ground." It is a beautiful thought to think that we can surrender to God and he will take control of our lives.
11. "God's Great Dance Floor" by Chris Tomlin
Chris Tomlin is an amazing contemporary christian singer. This song is so fun and catchy you just want to dance for joy. This song refers to the entire world, as "God's great dance floor." We sing and jump for joy because of this amazing life we have been given.
I could without a doubt list about one hundred more songs here, but no one wants to read an article that long. I hope that these songs can touch your heart and soul in one way another. God is good, all the time.
