As conferences have started announcing plans for what fall sports will entail this year, such as the Big 10 and Pac-12 announcing their intentions to play conference-only schedules, speculation grows for what the NCAA football season will look like come to the end of August.
As of right now, the Big 12 is still anticipating a full 12-game schedule, but some alternatives include a 9-game conference and 1 non-conference game schedule and/or the Red River Showdown being played as a home-and-home series for the first time in the rivalry's history. The ACC, SEC, and Big 12 are expected to release their plans by the end of July.
Though the current expectations could change in a moment's time, as college football teams are holding practices, holding weekly testing, and ensuring that every athlete is wearing a mask at all times during team events, the season is looking up. For example, the Sooners started team practices later than most teams, have had every athlete and staff member tested each week, have had those who tested positive be quarantined, and have required masks; because of these precautions that they have abided by, there are no active COVID-19 cases in the football department. This looks to be a positive sign that football will be played on Owen Field this season.
While football may be played normally, there is one key factor that is sure to not be normal this season: fans in the stands.
Every athletic department has various restrictions already set for the number of fans, if any, that will be allowed in each stadium. Over the past few weeks, universities such as Rutgers have announced that there will be no fans allowed into their home football games, while some schools such as the University of Texas at Austin have announced that they will be operating at 50% capacity.
On the other hand, some schools such as the University of Oklahoma haven't yet announced if fans will be permitted or if there will be a limit of how many will be allowed in.
Though the fan attendance in games will not be normal and every university's attendance will look different, what all sports fanatics can be excited for is the strong possibility of this season happening.
To help boost the possibility of football starting up this fall, wear a mask when out in public, practice social distancing, wash your hands regularly, and stay at home as much as possible.
