In the midst of the chaos of our busy lives we often forget to make time for ourselves. I know that each and every one of us are guilty of it. From balancing school, work, and a social life it seems as though your life is consumed by fulfilling others’ needs. We become so stressed out to the point that it begins to take a toll on our lives. This is why we need to learn how to take care of ourselves before we can care for others.
Everyone should take one day out of their busy lives and do the following for themselves:
You start this day off by not setting an alarm. Yes, this means you get to snoooooze for as long as you want. Sometimes our crazy lives insist on us depriving our sleep and every now and then we need one good night's rest to refresh ourselves. So yes, if this means sleeping in until 3:00 pm then you do it!
Once you get up, get dressed, and put on your makeup, head to that cute coffee shop you’ve been dying to go to. Go there alone, order some fancy caramel drink, and sit down and enjoy it. Enjoy the relaxing environment that coffee shops bring us.
While you’re at the coffee shop, you should journal. Journaling is the number one reason I am still alive in college. Journaling allows you to express yourself by words that you may not be able to say out loud. You can take note on your hectic life. Honestly, a weight is lifted off your shoulder after you journal.
Once you feel more relaxed than you have felt in a long time, now its time to head to the mall. You are going to splurge on yourself and buy that purse or shirt that you’ve been eyeing for months now. It’s okay to splurge every now and then. It’s all about treating yourself when you deserve it the most.
By the end of the day you should feel refreshed. You have spent the entire day alone and it should feel amazing. You have become more independent. You have cleared your foggy mind. You have given yourself a day for you and only you. Now I think the best way to end the day is going on a walk with someone close to you. Not because you can’t last one day being alone, but because we just love having our support system. We love spending our time with people that bring us joy and excitement.
Take a day, be alone, and enjoy every minute of it.
