10 Reasons Why I Stay

Deciding to come was easy, deciding to stay - now that was the hard part.

I came here because I was offered a once in a lifetime opportunity: something I thought I’d love. I liked other schools better, but they couldn’t give me what this one did, thus my college decision was effortless.

Recruited based on height and athleticism, I had never rowed before, nor had nearly 95% of my teammates. They over recruit - meaning they bring in 70 redshirts, hoping that 30 of them will return the following year.

I was part of the majority that would never see a regatta, winter training, countless sunrises over the lake, blisters and injuries, and everything else that comes with the D1 rowing experience.

It took me a while to come to terms with this, and over the course of this time I seriously considered transferring schools. I came here because of rowing, so after I left the team why did I stay?

1. I stay because of my once-teammates.

The long and gruesome practices created an unbreakable bond with my teammates. They were there for me when I was ready to quit, pushed me to continue, and supported me when I made the final decision to leave. They didn't leave my side because I left theirs. They continue to be the ones I smile at, eat and adventure with.

2. I stay because of my sorority sisters.

They truly are the sisters I never had.

3. I stay because of my roommate.

Every problem and every thought, she’s there to listen without judgement. I will never have to talk to myself or eat alone because of her. It took only three months for this stranger to become one of my best friends and it will take a lifetime to forget her.

4. I stay because of the people on my floor.

Marlit, Marfrat, Marlatt - whatever you want to call it - shout out to the third floor. From help with homework to 3AM life talks to movie nights cuddling on the futon, you have made college possible.

5. I stay because of the people in my classes.

Classes really shouldn’t be as fun as they are.

6. I stay because of my major.

I’m in one of only a handful of schools to be ABET accredited. This is one of the few places where I can pursue becoming an Architectural Engineer.

7. I stay because of the family.

We are a K-State family, as cheesy and cliche as it is.

8. I stay because this is home.

Home is where the heart is, and my heart has become very attached.

9. I stay because there is no reason to leave.

If you would have asked me two years ago where I was going to college, this would not have even made the Top 10 list. If you ask me now, I would tell you I don’t want to be anywhere else.

10. I stay because I am happy.

My smile has never been wider, my laughs louder, or my heart fuller. Manhattan, I am here to stay.
