11 Signs you Grew Up in Mansfield, TX

Mansfield, TX: the town everyone loves to hate. Everyone who lives there say they despise it, but deep down I think we all secretly liked growing up there. The now rapidly growing town was once the place where we watched countless football games under the Friday night lights and cheered on Mansfield High's men's soccer team when they went to state. Even though at times Mansfield could be a place of gossip and petty drama, it also served up some great memories I know we 90's babies will remember forever.

1. Wes Trimble and the whole Dallas Entourage Crew

It was a daily struggle logging into Facebook and seeing at least 4 invites a week from Wes to "College Night" at some whack club in Dallas. The popular pretty girls would dress up and go every Thursday. The rest of us sat at home wondering how they convinced their parents to let them go out on a school night.

2. Kelly Clarkson is our Claim to Fame

Everyone who lived in Mansfield knew it didn't take driving too far to find Kelly Clarkson's house. And if you go to Mansfield Dental Associates on Country Club Dr., consider yourself lucky! Kelly gets her teeth cleaned there too...or at least I know she has at least once and I have an autographed album to show it! Enjoy a cheesy photo of Ms. Clarkson photoshopped next to her Mansfield home.

3. You Made a Coach Harvill Joke Every Chance you Got

And you also get why there's a photo of a desk pictured. For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, look the story up online. In an attempt to not be tacky, I'll just leave this here. "heheh."

4. Newsom Stadium was your Pride and Joy

And #33 was your favorite player to watch. Stepfan Taylor went on to play for Stanford in college, and was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals in 2013. For those of us who were not good enough to go pro, Newsom Stadium made you feel like a professional every time you walked onto the field. There is no other feeling in the world that compares to playing on that nice turf and a huge crowd of people cheering you on.

5. Donnie's Philly Cheese Steak

If you never had the chance to visit Donnie's in Mansfield, you need to try it at their new Arlington location. For those of us who grew up in Mansfield, though, we know Donnie's Philly cheese steak is the best. I don't even like Philly cheese steaks, but my mouth waters every time I think about Donnie's. When you walk in, you're greeted with, "Hello, I love you!" from the owner. It seems creepy but she's the nicest lady on earth so it works. In Mansfield, I believe she was the only one working the shop. However, word got out about how good her sandwiches were, so she had to get more employees and a new shop in Arlington.

6. The Pond

If you're a girl who grew up in Mansfield, there's a chance you were taken here by a boy who was trying to impress you. Located behind Tipps Elementary School, it was walking distance to a lot of neighborhoods, and the hot spot for 15-year-old "dates." I think I had my first make out there after I rode my scooter to meet my middle school crush. So romantic....

7. The Cinemark

Although there are lots of Cinemark movie theaters throughout the U.S., ours was special because that was pretty much the only thing to do on a Friday night. We gathered up our friends, had our parents drop us off, and begged them for money to see an overpriced movie. Luckily the dollar store was right next door, so we stocked up on cheap candy, and then messed around in Best Buy for half an hour to waste time before the movie started. I vaguely remember breaking something horse playing in some store next to the Cinemark and being kicked out.

8. The Millennium

What is now Ace Hardware was the Millennium, a rinky-dink roller rink/arcade place that all the coolest 6th graders went to on the weekends. We wouldn't even skate. We just ran around and talked with friends, so I'm not really sure why we paid to get in.

9. You Could Smell Pickles from Miles Away

Mansfield is home to Best Maid Pickles, and their factory is located smack dab in the middle of town. You either love or hate the smell. Mansfield even has their own Pickle Parade every year. I have never in my life seen anyone so proud of pickles until we moved to Mansfield.

10. Mansfield Jogger Moms

Let's be honest, we all know Mansfield was known to be the "snobby town" with lots of hot, wealthy trophy wives. We couldn't drive down the street without the boys drooling over the milfs with perfectly done hair and makeup jogging down the streets of Mansfield.

11. You knew Mansfield High was the best in Mansfield

There are five (I think...it's hard to keep track) high schools in Mansfield, but everyone knows the original Mansfield Tigers do it best. However, Mansfield Legacy did produce Noah Syndergaard, pitcher for the New York Mets. My response to that? Refer to #4 on the list.

However you felt about Mansfield, you can't deny we had some good memories in the good ol' 817. And remember, once a tiger, always a tiger!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
