I just like being at the airport. Even though I love to travel and my dream is just to be able to visit exotic and fun places because I want to, it's not my reason for liking the airport. I definitely don't like the airport for its overpriced food or the fact that I have to take off my shoes to walk two meters on a cold floor. It's definitely not because of the long waiting hours or the extra security searches I have to go through as a result of the kink and length of my hair.
So, what do I like about the airport? What's so great about this busy transportation hub? What's so special about an area of such a complex of runways and buildings designed just for the takeoff and landing, which at the same time has facilities for passengers? What's so significant about one of the safest yet craziest places ever created?
It's the people!
The airport is where you find the most diversity. The most nationalities, the most languages, the most accents, the most varieties in eye color, skin color, hair color and the most variations of reasons to visit any destination.
However, what makes an airport special is not what distinguishes us as different from the person in front of us at the security checkpoint. It's not the cool fact that even though we are sitting beside each other, you're flying domestic and I may be flying internationally. Or the fact that your trip may be business-oriented and I'm on the way to school or to see my family.
What makes the airport special is the one thing that unites us. It's the fact that even though the reasons for our trips are different, our emotions are the same — we are emotionally distraught to leave family and we are excited to be reunited with them.
The airport is where you see the true emotions of people. Parents wake up at odd hours to get their kids to the airport early, just to grab on to them and hug them tightly for long moments. Husbands show care for wives by taking control of luggage, or wives take control of travel documents to make things easier for travel. Friends hold up embarrassing signs to make picking up friends from the airport the most epic moment ever.
I like being at the airport because there is so much love around. Family and friends express love through hugs and tears before they part and as they reunite. Those who don't travel with friends or family are constantly on their phones, taking pictures and posting statuses to keep loved ones aware of what's going on with travel.
I like being at the airport because it reminds me that the most important thing in life is life itself and the relationships and bonds we form while we are on this earth. Next time you're at the airport, look around and admire the love around you, and hug a bit tighter and remind those with you how much you love them.
