The world and the sport of lacrosse is being overlooked by the main stream media and it is honestly a tragedy.
Lacrosse was a sport that was developed by the Iroquois tribes of now Central New York. It was game first developed for warriors and hunters to help them train. It was a game they played for the Creator and is a game that is very sacred to the Native people, almost a religion of it's own.
Luckily enough for me, I grew up in Central New York, still a hot bed area for talented players and teams at both the high school and collegiate level. My dad and all of his brothers played lacrosse and passed it down to my brothers and I. And while I no longer play the sport, I am a volunteer coach for a little league in my community, passing it on to the next generation.
Lacrosse is an amazing sport to be apart of. There is never a calm game of lacrosse, which is kind of the point we all watch sports in the first place. It's fast. Most midfielders would probably be track stars if it wasn't in the same season. For any fan of contact sports, it's a lot of hard hits, the kind of hits fans will talk about for weeks after games. There's never a dull moment while watching or playing with everything moving so quickly. If you look down for a second at your phone you will probably miss an ESPN top ten goal. But these great athletes, games, and plays are being overlooked by the mainstream media for the most part.
Lacrosse, even though it was a very old game, is just starting its growth across for the U.S. For the longest time, a lot like hockey it was a sport just on the East Coast but it is starting to spread. In 2015, Denver became the first team from the West Coast to win the NCAA National Championship. And while this win was tough for fans from the East Coast like myself to watch (Go Cuse) it meant a lot from the sport. Denver has done a great job in recruiting some of their best players are from towns around the Central New York area, but this win means that the sport will start getting more looks out there meaning possibly a new generation of players from the mid west that took an interest after watching Denver being so successful in the sport.
Lacrosse, to many people, is more than just a sport it really is a way of life. It is one of those sports that once you get introduced to it, it's very easy to get hooked. You'll find yourself traveling all over to follow your favorite teams and cheer them on. You'll begin to plan your weekends in the spring around Saturday afternoon games. Each player with a different style will bring something new and different to your team. There will be those players on other teams that you hate only because they don't play for your team (looking at you Matt Cavanaugh). There will never be a dull game.
And let's be honest, would you really rather watch baseball?
