Why I'm Glad There Are 400+ Girls in My Sorority
Alpha Omicron Pi

Coming to the University of Alabama, where the Greek system is numerically the largest in the country, I knew that I had to participate in sorority recruitment. While my friends at other schools became close with their 30-person pledge class, I got to know over 120 other freshmen girls, along with the rest of my chapter, and for that, I could not be happier. I didn’t expect to love over 400 girls so quickly.

1. I’m always making new friends.

While it’s easy to recognize names and faces, it's not nearly as easy to make that many deep friendships. As the years go on, I am constantly making new friends with girls that I didn’t know as well during freshman year. It is amazing to see how just being in the same pledge class as someone is enough to build a friendship off of. The same goes for the rest of my chapter. My sisters are always willing to strike up a conversation in order to get to know each other better every single day.

2. I always have someone to eat lunch with.

I don’t have to worry about walking into a house and eating lunch by myself. There is always someone there at all hours of the day, which makes our house feel even more like a home.

3. Sisterhood events are like parties.

I love sisterhood events. 400 of your best friends at a concert? Go-karting? The new "50 Shades of Grey" movie? It’s like a dream come true.

4. I always see a sister walking through campus.

I don’t remember the last time I walked through campus and didn’t see a girl from my chapter. Even on a campus of over 35,000 students, I always see at least a couple of my sisters out and about on a regular basis.

5. There are so many different girls in my chapter.

From girls who are amazingly talented dancers, to girls that are presidents of numerous honor societies, to girls on the rowing team, there are so many girls involved in so many different organizations on campus. It’s amazing to see all of the talents there are within my chapter and how many different girls there are, yet we all still relate to each other through our sorority.

6. I’ve got sisters across the country.

If I were to take a road trip across the US, I’d see almost my entire chapter along the way. Wherever I go, I know someone will always be there.

7. Someone is always there for me.

At the end of the day, college is not easy. During tough times, girls I have never spoken to have reached out and been amazing sisters. I could not be more grateful for such an amazing support at all times and I know that if I needed someone, I’d have a sister there in a heartbeat.

At first, being a member of such a huge chapter was overwhelming, but looking back, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
