5 Reasons Why I Went Through Recruitment

Because sorority poses are just too fun to pass up

5 Reasons Why I Went Through Recruitment
"From the outside looking in, you can never understand it. From the inside looking out, you can never explain it."

Though cliche, this quote is surprisingly accurate. As I near towards initiation, I began looking back at my recruitment experience and why I went through with it.

1. Dressing Up

I love dressing up, and I'd be lying if I said my first thoughts when considering rushing was getting to dress up in cute clothes and take lots of pictures (which we did on bid day of course). Who wouldn't want to have an excuse to wear cute dresses?

2. Sisters!

Throughout high school I didn't have a ton of super close girlfriends. I had a few that I was super close with and though I was perfectly content with the amount of close girlfriends I had, the support system of 100 girls in a sorority was something I couldn't pass up. These are the girls that will be there to laugh when you trip, but pick you up right after.

3. School Help/ Grades

You have a test coming up you're struggling for? There are study files, there are sisters there to tutor. You have a paper you need to be edited? There are sisters willing to edit. Registering for classes and want to know what to take and what professor is easiest? Guess what, I guarantee there is someone in the house that took those classes and can help you. I had a sister plan out my whole schedule with me. Without her, I wouldn't have known where to even begin. Your sisters want you to succeed and they'll do anything they can to help you do just that.

4. Social Networking

Most don't realize it, but sorority sisters give you so many connections in the scary "real world." Whether it be recommending you for a job, helping you perfect your resume, or just meeting someone at a place of business that's an alum of your house, your sisters are there to help you succeed in any way possible. We are at college to get a degree/job after all.

5. Unconditional Love

Basically sorority sisters are like your second family (huh, no wonder we have greek families). They'll love you no matter what and are always there for you. Call them at 2 a.m. crying? They'll be at your dorm in 5 minutes. Call them at 2am wanting to go McDonald's? They'll be at your dorm in 5 minutes (okay... maybe. Depends how much they're craving McDonald's like I always am at 2 a.m.).

I get that this is kind of reiterating the past four points, but it's the biggest reason I went through with the chaos and stress that is formal recruitment. And although recruitment made me the biggest nervous wreck I think I've ever been, when you get that bid from the house made just for you, it has all become worth it. I wouldn't trade being a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma for anything in the world.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
