There is a lot of talk about baseball being America's favorite pastime, but let's face it: Football has taken over with a fiery frenzy.
Georgia fans love their Bulldogs (even when they come up short), and professional football has seen a spike in ratings. Now women love to watch football as well, and the diverse crowd it attracts is making the game easier to love and understand.
Before we get into why football season is the best, I will admit that the spike in penalties is taking away from the quality of football being produced. Baseball does get props because there aren't any penalties (no vexatious pass interference penalties). I digress, but football remains king in the American sports arena.
Football season is the best because of the fan loyalty. Every once in a while, we bump into a bandwagon New England Patriots fan, but for the most part, football fans are loyal to their team win or lose (but if you're a Falcons fan for the past three seasons, it's been hell-fire and brimstone). Many people support the same team regardless of geographical location. A co-worker of mine is from Houston but is a Dallas fan who has lived in Atlanta for many losing Cowboys seasons. I'ts not like the NBA when everybody's favorite team is whatever team LeBron signs with.
Fantasy Football is a well marketed ploy that allows fans to interact with the NFL and college football experience. Instead of keeping up with your favorite team, people are now able to recognize individual players and their stats regardless of what team they play for. Women are now keeping up with football and are beating their better half in the playoffs thanks to fantasy football. It is hard to believe, but women can now hold the bragging rights in their relationship thanks to fantasy football.
Football season is awesome because they are modern day gladiators. Without the gore and marred body parts, football is very high-speed and one of the more violent games we have for legal mass consumption. The keyword here is legal. There is a push on behalf of retired players to improve the level of safety of the game, but let's face it, football is just about as violent as it gets when it comes to mainstream sporting leagues in the country.
The last reason why football season reigns supreme is because of the Super Bowl (commercials). The Super Bowl is the grandest championship platform in the nation. Unlike in other sports, the Super Bowl is one game, not a series, which adds to the intensity and seriousness of the game. Of course, some games are over by halftime, but the Super Bowl is a daunting spectacle. The halftime shows are iconic, and the commercials are unforgettable.
