OK, so we all know that a couple years ago, the FIFA World Cup was going on in Brazil in the summer. The summer of 2014 also happened to be the summer right before I went to college. With no sports or school commitments, the only thing I had to do was lifeguard and be lazy. During that lazy period one day, my friend Nick and I were chilling in his lavish basement. We were bored as hell and were about to start eating each other - we were very hungry. I suggested we watch some world cup matches. Nick said sure, and we started watching. After about 10 minutes we realized that soccer is not exciting to us for one reason: We are American.
We as Americans need to feel the action, like in football and basketball. Watching soccer just isn't thrilling when we have much more violent and stupid things to watch, like football and Jersey Shore. So, I suggested we play FIFA.
Worst mistake of my life.
Upon putting the game in the X-box and playing our first of many games, it was like taking the most highly addictive drug you can think of, and injecting 10 pounds of it directly into your Jugular. It was so addictive. We played for hours. We played well into the night, and then at 1 a.m. went to the sketchiest grocery store we could think of and bought endless bags of cheesy snacks.
And we just kept playing.
Now I know what you're thinking. How could endless cheese puffs and video games possibly be bad for your physical and mental health?
I'll tell you how.
For months after, it' s all any of my friends or I could do. We played non-stop. We ate cheese snacks until one day I sneezed on my toast and it became grilled cheese. And the worst part about it was:
You just couldn't stop.
Because in soccer there is a small chance you will score a goal, sometimes the score would be 2-0. 2-1. 3-2. It was so intense and close but so far away at the same time. You dribble all the way down the field, cross the ball perfectly, and shoot. And the ball would go sailing over the net.
You would throw your controller at the couch and words used only by motorcycle gangs would fly out of your mouth. The heartbreak of losing a match was enough to keep you going for days.
I still am not over my FIFA addiction, and every time I play, in one way or another, I manage to lose. But, I just can't stop playing.
