In high school, my best friend and I got a trainer together and would go workout with her on Saturday’s and then without her the rest of the week. One day, our trainer decided it would be good for us to spin for our cardio and I never hated anything more. I was wearing shorts which is the CARDINAL no in spinning. My relatively thin legs were pushed up against the sides of the bike seat rubbing painfully for 45 minutes WHILE my butt was pounded on the shaky bike. The instructor was boring and the lights were too bright and the entire time I wanted to be outside running instead, my preferred choice of cardio at the time. Additionally, my insecure high school self didn’t want to look uneducated and uncool in front of the room so I failed to adjust my bike after adjusting it the first time. I vowed to never spin again, never. I went on to preach to everyone that spin was torture and recommended that everyone stay FAR away from it.
Fortunately, the cycle fad hit two or so years ago and spin became like really cool. Being a college woman obsessed with fitness, I was positively uncool to not be spinning or at least to deny that I enjoyed it so I decided to give it a try again. Grudgingly desperate to up my cardio in an entertaining way, I signed up for spin class at my school. As I walked in, nervous as my competitive self always gets before starting something new, nervous that I won’t be the greatest, I grabbed a spot in the front and center of the room (directly facing the instructor). This is quite the classic spot for me to be in the room and boy was it a great choice for spin class. Oh and I wore leggings this time because now that I’m in college I’m educated and intelligent and think about my choices and what not.
Anyways, the music was amazing in this class which is certainly owed to the instructor being young and hip unlike the older woman who taught the class I had taken in high school who thought that Michael Jackson was fun to spin to. One reason spinning is awesome is because you can listen to music and your headphones don’t annoy you because you’re not wearing any. If the instructor is dope, they’ll turn the music up so loud that you get lost in it. The entire point of music in spin class is so that you spin to the beat of the song which is why getting lost in the music is such a beautiful thing. You don’t focus on the pain because you’re focused on the beat and moving to it. Genius.
The other amazing thing about spinning is that you can burn 900 calories (if you’re a maniac and spin at full force like me the entire time) in 45 minutes. WHAT OTHER FITNESS ACTIVITY PROVIDES YOU THAT OPPORTUNITY IN A FUN AND FLIRTY WAY!? Nothing. I say flirty because there is something so flirty about spinning, it’s so elegant and badass ** see 900 calories statement ** which to me is flirty.
Spinning is the bomb.com and if you haven’t tried it, you really should, like tomorrow. Sign up for a class now. Oh and the best part is you can always make it harder so if you’re new to fitness or a seasoned pro it’s still a killer workout. Again, I ask you - WHAT OTHER FITNESS ACTIVITY DOES THAT (easily at least)?! Not many. You can turn up the resistance or just go at a faster RPM. It’s easy to see how hard you’re working too which is awesome. So go out there, kick off your New Year’s Resolution with a baller spin class and feel on top of the fitness world. Oh one last perk, your booty will literally be *poppin*.
