Recently, Netflix came out with a new documentary series called, Last Chance U. Being a former college athlete, I can relate to the everyday things they have to accomplish and their everyday struggles. But for anyone who considers themselves a true “athlete”, this show will leave you with chills after every episode. Every kick, throw, catch, and play, this series has helped me remember how lucky I am to be a former Division 1 college athlete, even if it wasn’t the path God chose for me.
1. High School Matters:
Many high school athletes do not understand what goes into being able to participate at the Division 1 level, including me. Division 1 schools, they don’t want average, they can get average from any mediocre athlete, they want perfection. High school is when you learn the bases of what you will learn in college. This is how I see it, if you don’t get it in high school, then you will struggle that much more in college. Every test, quiz, and homework assignment, it matters. These D1 schools, they want perfection, they want dedication, they want all the ingredients to instant brownies, right there, so all they have to do is mix it, then bake it to perfection.
2. Class Matters:
It seems as though people have misconceptions that student athletes get away with missing class and assignments because they are athletes. Student athletes are held to a whole other level than regular students. Athletes are what put a school on the map, because of that, schools want athletes to have at least a 3.0 or better. For many college students, they think that is easy, but factoring school work into practice, weights, meetings, and more practice isn’t easy, especially for the athletes that coasted on their playing abilities previously.
3. Family:
This series really shows how teams are a family. They fight and talk crap about each other, but in the end, they will stick up for anyone who threatens them. While watching the series, didn’t really think they were a family, all the players were at that junior college to get to the D1 level. But, when a huge brawl broke out and one of their players was getting hurt, not one player stayed on the bench, they all went to fight for their brother.
Last Chance U is an amazing series, it really opened my eyes to how blessed I was personally, going right to a D1 school. I rate Last Chance U 11 out of 10, left me in tears or with chills after every episode!
