First, let me clarify something: I have nothing against people with the "Dad Bod." I agree, dad bods are approachable and show that a guy has great taste in food and beer. Bonus points if you can picture him raising your children, since he already looks like a dad.
However, I do have something against the ridiculous obsession with dad bods and the fact that we praise guys for the bodies attained by drinking a lot of beer and going to the gym once every two weeks, yet we still hold girls to unrealistic standards of beauty and the expectation to have a perfect figure.
I just don't see how it is fair that girls are expected to work out for hours each day to try and get the body of a Victoria's Secret Angel while frat guys can just sit on their front lawn of their fraternity house (beer in hand) watching them jog past.
Why don't we make the "Mom Bod" a thing? If a girl had a "Mom Bod," I can guarantee that we would not see an obsession over it in the way that we obsess over dad bods. In fact, we would probably say that she needed to lose a few pounds and order the Kayla Itsines bikini body guides. (This is another growing obsession among college gals, but that's a story for another day.)
The dad bod is an epidemic. I think it's a little humorous that girls love guys with dad bods because they can picture them raising their kids a couple years down the road. Isn't it funny, though, that the "Mom Bod" isn't a thing, considering the fact that women are the ones who actually give birth to the children that your guy with a dad bod will be raising?
Dad bods are obsessed over because they are approachable and make us, the girls, feel better about our bodies. Another red flag! Why can we only feel good about our bodies when we feel tiny and cute next to a dad bod? What about the guy who goes to the gym not only to better his appearance but also his personal health? He can encourage you to do the same, in turn making both of you feel good about yourselves.
Again, I have nothing against the dad bod or people with the dad bod. Dad bods are great. But so are 6-pack-abs. And so are guys who are skinny. And so are girls with curves. And so are girls who look like Victoria's Secret Angels. And so are "Mom Bods!"
All I'm trying to say is that instead of glorifying a certain type of body type, we should appreciate all body types. There is no "perfect" body, for guys or girls. Let's celebrate all body types, whether their owner enjoys drinking beer and eating pizza or prefers to run eight miles a day.
