Having a business through a direct selling company was the best decision. But I had to find the right company and when I found Younique, the makeup that empowers and uplifts women, I knew it was the right fit for me. Direct selling is where marketing and products are sold directly to the consumers from personal arrangements, a person and online. So I am an independent presenter for Younique, where I share makeup (we don't like to say sell—I'd rather share a great product). I start out making 20 percent of commissions on my sales. I run my own business through Younique and love it. I work booths at events, have friends and family host online or home parties and do all the marketing with some help from my sponsors and the one who has been in direct selling longer than me and is so inspiring, my mom.

It was little over a year ago that I was first introduced to Younique. I was a week out from flying home from Florida to visit my family. My mom was hosting a virtual Younique party online for my former twirling friend who is a presenter, Lori. Lori talked to me about hosting a party and I was on the edge. I didn’t really know if I wanted to or not. I love makeup but I have never used Younique before. A week later, I fly home and visit my mom. She had bought some of the makeup. And guess who got sent back with Younique? Yep. Me. I got sent with the Mineral Touch Powder, The Beachfront Bronzer, 3D Fiber Lashes and the Stiff Upper Lip Stain. I really wanted to try the lashes but ended up trying all the products she gave me and used them all! I fell in love. I then messaged Lori and jumped on hosting a party. That was the moment I loved Younique. I loved the Fiber Lashes the most. They work! I came home from Florida to finish school and Lori kept in touch with me trying to give me that extra push I needed, well it took almost a complete year until I finally decided to turn this into my business. I was so packed with school I hadn’t thought about it until I was talking with my mom about Scentsy, as she is a director. I had told her I have always wanted to do something like she does, which she knows of course. I even tried selling South Hill a while back. But I can’t sell Scentsy right now because we live in the same house. And I wanted to find that one thing for me. And we were talking, and it just so happens that Lori’s mom had joined Scentsy under my mom and so we brought that up and were talking about Lori’s business with Younique, and a light bulb went off. I said that’s it. And I didn’t tell Lori, I looked it up and read on it and then I just joined underneath Lori. And I have to tell you, it’s been the best $99 I have ever spent.

I didn’t join Younique to steal the $250 kit for $99. I joined because I have looked up to my mom and her business for years now and wanted to follow in her footsteps. I joined Younique because it’s products that I love and know fits me and my personality. I joined Younique because I believe in the company and their mission to empower and uplift women. I love how I feel when I wear Younique. I feel uplifted and motivated to do something active. To be who I am. People think I’m crazy. It’s not something they think they could do. And I tell them that I didn’t think I could either, but here I am. I got a new mindset. I stepped out of my head and said I can do this. Instead of I can't. And it was the best decision. I have been doubted sometimes, I have only been with Younique for a few months and I’m patient but sometimes I find myself going back to my head, but thank goodness I have Lori and my mom coaching me and pushing me. And everyone who supports me and my business. As a 20 year old, some would think I should just be focused on college and living it up, but I am focusing on college, of course, and my future. As a marketing major, having my own business where I am the boss, I have flexible hours and I do all the marketing furthers my understanding and helps me grow in my major. I have gotten a head start and I am grateful every day.

If you are on the edge of joining a direct selling company. Let me tell you find what works for you. There are so many direct selling companies out there. Scentsy, Younique, It Works, Thirty One, etc. Do the research on each one you are interested in. Find the best one that fits you. Not anyone else but you. And don’t be afraid of people thinking you’re annoying when you try to run your business. You just have to do it. Put yourself out there. There will those people who don’t believe but there will be many more who believe in you! Starting your own business through a direct selling company is a great way to make some extra cash, build relationships, and grow as a person and also travel. You may never think you could be a leader and present in front of a thousand or more of people at a convention and you end up doing it. This is what happened to my mom, and I have never been so proud. She inspires me every day. And I never thought I could do any of this until I saw her do it and now here I am. Don’t be afraid. You may just end up with a career and lifelong friendships, and items on your bucket list checked off.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
