Why I Chose Saint Leo
Rachael Stewart

Growing up and thinking about college, and wondering where you will end up, everyone always thinks about the big schools like the University of Florida, or Florida State University. No one ever thinks about the small private schools like Saint Leo University.

It was getting closer to Christmas time my senior year, and I still was not sure where I was going to go. I got a flyer in the mail from Saint Leo. I went and applied just because, and if I got accepted then I would go and tour the school, and if I did not, then no big deal because I knew nothing about the school. I applied, and the next day I got a call saying I was accepted! I set up a tour, and I loved everything about the school. It was small, so I would not get lost as easily, everything was so beautiful, everyone waved and smiled at each other, and most importantly, the class average is about 25 people.

So months flew by, I graduated high school, and it was Fall of 2015 and I was so excited to move into my freshmen dorm and start my life at Saint Leo.

Throughout the year, I went through many highs, and many low in my life. And I am so glad everything happened the way it did at the place I was at.

I chose Saint Leo for the fun and creative adventures it has brought to me. Since it is away from the city and the closest thing is about fifteen minutes away, you have to get a little adventurous with the campus. And with that being said, I just met and talked to people I did not know that much and befriended them. Hung out with my friends who lived down the hall from me.

Saint Leo staff and professors LOVE their students. Your professor knows your name and who you are. They are willing to help you pass the class with a good grade. Your advisor knows who you are too! They care how well you are doing in your class and if you are on the right track to graduating. There is always someone willing to help you pass. We have a ton of free tutors on campus that will also help you with any assignment you are having trouble with, or if you just do now understand the class, they are there to give you a little extra help on learning it and understanding.

Also, Saint Leo has Greek life. We may not have many organizations, but the organizations we do have are the best ones around. It does not matter which sorority or fraternity you are in, all Greeks get together all the time.

Everyone feels at home at Saint Leo. But it is understandable because the school is not for everyone, but the school makes sure that there is something to do for everyone!

You will love the person you become here!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
