Why Being Prom Queen Isn't Everything

Some kids spend their entire lives wanting to be prom queen. They sit in their beds staring at the ceiling waiting for the day that popularity smacks them in their face. Kids dream that being a “cool kid” will come.

I did too. When I was younger, I was bullied and wished I had a lot of friends and would’ve done anything to get them. When I got to high school, in the beginning, I was terrified and scared. I thought everyone was out to get me and I was too shy. Then, I realized, these people, and these walls, won’t last forever.

When I did start to get a lot of friends, I just kept getting more and more. I was friends with so many people from so many cliques. Yes, they do exist, and if you think they don’t, you’re naive. I was a part of a few by the end of high school; I wasn’t in any I was a floater between a few.

What I’m trying to tell you is that the friends you make in high school may stick around, but they may not. And if you want friends based on popularity, you may be left with no one after high school. Getting friends is simple: Be kind.

Kindness is free and being friends with someone is too. There’s no need to make rumors, lie, or be mean to people. It’s a waste of time, quite frankly.

Senior year, I won prom queen and the feeling that floated through my body wasn’t vain, wasn’t popularity, but pure love. I felt that all of my friends cared so much about me. When I left the gym after winning, I was crushed by so many hugs, and that was my favorite part. The kindness from my peers is what was important to me. Of course, when I got my crown, I wanted to pull a Mean Girls and break it, but let’s be honest, I wanted it just a little bit.

On prom night, I danced with everyone. I took pictures with everyone; It was so much fun. So, the moral of the story is to be kind, and to not worry about becoming prom queen. Because I would’ve had the same amount of fun that night even if I didn’t get crowned. And enjoy high school, because what comes next is the best, and the most wonderful part of your life. So embrace it, love it, and have a blast.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
