In life, we all go through situations that determine the things we do or what we purchase. I have been living on my own for almost two years now and have already learned more than I ever expected.
One thing my parents always taught me is that I need to learn that no matter what position you are in life wealth-wise, you always have to watch your expenses, especially with being in college. Almost a year and a half ago, my amazing girlfriend and I decided that we were ready to become an owner of a pet. Although I will always be a dog person, we decided to get a cat named Oliver, and it has changed my life for the better.
Owning a pet while in you're in college, to me, is personally one of the best things any college students or couples can do. However, as much fun as it is to own an animal, it's also very challenging. But, I've learned that the reward is very worth it.
I have had cats throughout the random periods of my life, but I was always a dog person at heart. However, a cat is less difficult to raise long-term than a dog due to medical expenses, amount of food and of course, the always favorite—going to the bathroom.
Luckily with Oliver, I can be gone for a 10-hour day going to the gym, class, and then other activities, but I don’t have to worry about him needing to go to the bathroom or wanting attention.
Oliver has made me more financially responsible with my money because sure, I’d love nothing more than to go to Buffalo Wild Wings with my friends and watch the Blackhawks game, take Caitlyn out to a nice steak dinner where the appetizer costs almost as much as the main course or buy myself something. However, being in college, you have to be careful with your expenses. Owning an animal makes you more focused on your wallet because, in a way, you’re responsible for an animal’s livelihood.
No matter what kind of day I have, whether it be great or horrible, I can always come home and the second I walk into the door, Oliver will always be there to say hello. The thing I love most about him is that he will literally meow as loud as he can until I start petting him, which can be awhile at times.
Despite all of the struggles that come with college, owning an animal while studying makes you more focused on your objectives in life. Sure, there are times when Oliver can be annoying, like running around very loudly at two in the morning. or not covering up where he went to the bathroom, but in the end, I love that little guy. He always gives Caitlyn and I the exact same amount of love that we give him every single day and for that, we are very lucky.
