First of all, I just got my first dog about a month ago. His name is Jake and he is perfect (as seen below).

1. Owning a pet teaches you responsibility.
There is a huge difference between responsibly raising a Tamagatchi and raising a puppy. In just one short month I have learned how to budget both my money (because pet food is expensive and vets are golddiggers) and my time (because puppies pee frequently and they are not afraid to do their business on your carpet). Before owning a dog I would blow every paycheck on coffee and be up all night social media but now, I actually have money in my savings and a bedtime. I mean, I'm basically an adult.
2. Pets teach you how to love.
What is one thing that people in their 20's know absolutely nothing about? Love. What is one thing that animals, especially dogs, know how to do unconditionally? Love. It doesn't matter how many times I accidentally step on my puppy or how many hours I leave him alone, he will always love me. I once accidentally stepped on my brother's toe and he proceeded to chase me about the house trying to step on my toes in return. Be more like my puppy and less like my brother.
3. Pets are amazing for stress.
Owning a pet is highly recommended for the highly stressed and who is more stressed than a 20-year-old? Because while you could come home from a long day to puppy cuddles and tail wags and wet kisses, instead all you have are your textbooks to keep you warm. So trade in those unreasonably expensive textbooks and go rescue a puppy from the pound! While your parents may be disappointed in your life choices, you won't regret it.
4. Pets keep you active.
While I am totally the type of girl to spend full days binge watching Netflix, since owning a dog I have actually been fairly active. Just the other day, my dog and I went on an adventure to catch Pokemon (because Pokemon is for adults too). Even the laziest of lap dogs need exercise and there are such things as cat leashes. I have even seen a ferret on a leash before so I can promise whatever your pet of choice may be, they will get you out and about.
5. Pets are a great support system.
This plays back on the love aspect. Animals will support you in anything you do. If you are super excited about joining the football teams, your dog will gladly help you practice. If you are stressed for a final exam, your cat is totally down to sleep your worries away. And if someone is on your very last nerve, your pet is going to be right behind you growling or peeing in their shoes.
While owning a pet is expensive and time consuming, they are worth every ounce of effort you put into them so why not use your youth to giving a pet the loving home they deserve?
