If you have high school seniors as friends on Facebook, this is the time when you see them announcing where they will attend college for hopefully the next four years. I went out and asked a few Wolf Pack students why they decided to continue their education at this tier-one college
Graham Koening, a senior nursing major from Concord, said, “California schools are impacted and expensive, and a lot don’t have nursing. UNR had a respectable nursing program and wasn’t too expensive. I knew I could get in and out in four years. I also received a scholarship or two, and it was close enough to home that I could come back in an emergency, but far enough away that my folks wouldn’t just stop by."
Taylor Dougherty, a sophomore from Las Vegas, said, “I didn't want to go to UNLV, and I had a lot of friends who had went to UNR before me and loved it. I also wanted to leave home without going too far and get in state tuition.”
Alec Simpson, an incoming freshman who committed to play football at Nevada, is making the transition from sunny SoCal to Reno. “I chose to play college football and attend the University of Nevada because of its great combination of athletics and academics," he said. "There's no better family environment than UNR, whether it's on campus or in the locker room. The team plays as a unit and as one big family. As that's exactly what I was looking for. Also the coaching staff is amazing and like father figures to look up to for sure. UNR also had an amazing broadcast journalism program, which is what I plan on studying.”
As for myself, I chose to attend UNR because of the great journalism school, not mention that Tahoe was a big selling point for me.
