There are many options you can choose from when the gym that you use (for free) is not available. A definite possibility is getting another membership at a fitness center near you. However, those memberships can be pricey, especially if you only need one for a short amount of time. So outside might be the only option. Here’s a list of alternatives you can do outside that can help you get the workout you’re looking for:
1. Go for a run/walk.
In Tampa, Florida there are so many routes you can use for a great run. Go and run along the Tampa Riverwalk which stretches along the Hillsborough River and the downtown area. If you’re not up to running near downtown, go and head towards Bayshore Boulevard. Along the boulevard is the longest sidewalk in the nation. While running on the pavement be sure to check out the exercise equipment that is stationed next to the sidewalk. And if you’re not ready to take on Tampa outside of campus, there is the track at Pepin Stadium where you can definitely get your miles in.
2. Go bike.
Biking around Tampa is probably the best way to get to know the downtown city and get a workout in. Bike through downtown, Bayshore, Riverwalk, Harbor Island, Davis Island, or anywhere you want to go! And if you want more of a workout, stop and do the exercise areas on Bayshore or get some stairs in at the Convention Center or do some body weight exercises.
3. Stairs!
They are killers, don’t get me wrong, but they are a fantastic workout. You can do them at Pepin Stadium or the Convention Center in downtown Tampa or anywhere that has a good set of steps. If you do them right and add additional exercises when you rest, you get a great well-rounded workout.
4. Free workouts.
Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park will do free workout programs right on the big grassy steps and areas. Go check out a yoga session, Zumba, or other fitness events. They are super fun and you get to meet new people who, like you, want to be physically fit. The easiest way to find these events is on Facebook.
