Where Happiness Should Come From

"The most important thing is to enjoy your life, to be happy; it's all that matters." --Audrey Hepburn

Merriam-Webster defines happiness as: "a state of well-being and contentment; a pleasurable or satisfying experience." All anyone wants is to be happy. But where does happiness come from? What makes us feel good? There are a lot of people, places and things that bring us joy, but there are some things that everyone should have in their life for the simple pleasure of feeling true happiness.

1. Friends and/or family

Our family are the friends we're stuck with for life and our friends are the family we choose for ourselves. You don't need a lot of friends or family members to be happy. It only takes one person to make a difference, so find that person and stick to him or her. Try to keep your "happy soulmate" for life. Shout out to my little brother for being my happy person!

2. Music

Music is a great way to express emotions and encourage particular moods. I know if I'm upset and need a good cry, I listen to sad music and let the waterworks flow. The same goes with happiness. Find a band and/or artist that speaks to you, for whatever reason and make an effort to listen to them once a day or at least once a week. It can give you the little boost of joy you may need to get through the day.

3. Food

The food we put in our body doesn't just affect our physical being; it affects our emotional and mental states as well. Eating healthier foods, like fruits, can give you a burst of energy and result in an overall feeling of satisfaction. Also, eating your favorite food (how often should depend on its health benefits) can aid in feeling contentedness.

4. Animals

Having direct contact with a pet or even just looking at pictures of cute animals warms everyone's hearts. I know I could spend all day watching videos of puppies play around or animals doing silly things. It just makes you feel good.

5. Yourself

This one is the most important: you have to make yourself happy. It's important to love yourself. If for some reason you don't, see what you could change in your life to make you feel better. Try looking at situations from a different perspective. Just having a positive attitude can lead to positive results. At the end of the day, if you're not happy with yourself, then you won't be happy with anything. Remember, you are good enough and you are worth it.

Smile wide enough to make your face hurt.

I'll never forget the day that someone told me these words: "Madison, I think you're a good friend to everyone but yourself." I stood there completely in awe of that statement. Before that day, I never really thought about being a friend to myself, and at the time, I didn't really know what it meant. Now, I realize that you can't fully be there for other people unless you're there for yourself, too. You can't show up for others until you're willing to show up for yourself.

Here are five things everyone should learn in order to be a better friend to themselves. These steps are hard, but they're so worth it.
