Team sports require a team, they require a unit all working together as one. And, if that unit doesn’t work together it can become an awful experience. Having a team the clicks together is just as important as having a team that is skilled, because teams that don’t work well together, will have a difficult time finding success compared to teams that do. And as a player, I can say that it is much more fun to play on a team that is connected.
When a team is connected it provides a sense of comfort for the players. It provides an environment where everyone feels comfortable and everyone is loose. This allows the players to play better because they feel like their teammates want them to succeed. The players want to play and their teammates want them to do their best so, overall, it is the perfect situation to be in.
When it comes down to the end, it may seem that the team that is the most comfortable around each other doesn’t always win. But in reality, that team comes out on top more often than not. This is because when the team is comfortable which each other, the game is no longer work, it becomes more of a fun experience. And if the team that clicks doesn’t come out on top, there is more of a chance that the game will still be significantly more enjoyable for the team that clicks then the team that isn’t as connected.
Don’t get me wrong, skill is important when playing sports. Any team that is put together needs to have some skill to allow for any type of success, but there isn’t a need for a tremendous amount of skill when the team enjoys working with each other, compared to a team the dreads being around each other every single day.
So as a coach picking a team, skill is important. But even more, important than skill is having a team that clicks. Because when this happens, a team can have endless opportunity.
