10 Things You Know To Be True If Your Roommates Are Also Your Best Friends

I'll be honest with you, I almost didn't have roommates my freshman year.

I was dead set on getting a single suite and living by myself for the first year. I felt like I had heard too many roommate horror stories and didn't want that to happen to me.

However, I was concerned about making friends my first year since I was a freshman and knew virtually no one at the university.

Once I joined the "UNC 2022" Facebook group, my anxiety grew even more. It seemed that everyone was looking for roommates and making friends except me. Hesitantly, I posted a little about myself to the group hoping to make a few friends and soon people were messaging me asking about being roommates. It was in that moment that I was forced to reconsider living by myself.

Let me tell you, I'm so glad that I did.

In the end, I ended up getting a 4 person 4 bedroom suite and it was the best decision I ever made. I have three amazing roommates who I love so much and am happy to say that they are truly my best friends. So, if you're like me and your roommates are also your best friends, here are 10 things you know to be true:

1. If one of you pulls an all-nighter, everyone pulls an all-nighter.

I've lost count of how many all-nighters I've pulled, many not on my own. It's just that we don't want anyone to suffer alone. Also, study break dance parties are a must.

2. "When will you be home, I miss you?" texts.

When one of us leaves there's an automatic "when will you be home?" to our group chat. When you live with someone most of the week, their absence is very obvious.

3. You make plans at unspeakable hours often.

We have a long list of the things that we've done at hours that no normal person should be up. Once we decorated our door for Halloween at 12 am and went all out. We had caution tape, handmade drawings, you name it. We've also made many gas station trips for Calypso lemonade and Sour Patch kids too.

4. Your Snapchat is full of embarrassing photos and videos of them.

Not gonna lie, most of my Snapchat memories are full of photos and videos of my roommates doing the most insane things. They're arguably the craziest and funniest people that I know.

5. You ask for their opinion before any event.

Whether I'm asking if I should make ramen at 12 am, if I look fat in this dress, or should I drop out, I ask their opinion. They also, in turn, ask me for my opinion as well.

6. No one can decode your group chat except for you.

https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwjQ5dDKv9LeAhWvmuAKHTZPBpMQjhx6BAgBEAM&url=https%3A%2F%2Fimgur.com%2Fgallery%2FnT2pVky&psig=AOvVaw07GaEkb37UnPUKkwqBKxEI&ust=1542237237655748

To all my other friends, our group chat is almost a foreign language to them. It's full of inside jokes and phrases so that only we know what is going on.

7. Dinners together almost every night.

https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwiDlZjWwNLeAhVmZN8KHbsQD3EQjhx6BAgBEAM&url=https%3A%2F%2Ftenor.com%2Fsearch%2Fsupernatural-food-gifs&psig=AOvVaw204uoWJby4Kj4XY9WmA9Pv&ust=1542237536543292

I jokingly call it "family dinner time" but really that's pretty much what it is. We eat together pretty much every night of the week. Why? Who else isn't gonna judge me for eating four slices of pizza in a row?

8. You know their entire life story down to every detail.

https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwix2d_qwNLeAhULhOAKHWSYD5QQjhx6BAgBEAM&url=https%3A%2F%2Ftenor.com%2Fsearch%2Ftell-me-more-gifs&psig=AOvVaw0Hrw2RAYeyVUTl_crR83A2&ust=1542237577247349

Honestly, I've never been so close to people before and known so much about them. Not even my other friends have told me as much about them as my roommates have.

9. You share similar thoughts on people, places, etc.

https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwiC26KhwdLeAhXvYt8KHelHCN8Qjhx6BAgBEAM&url=https%3A%2F%2Fgiphy.com%2Fexplore%2Fhate-her&psig=AOvVaw3bAR7ClOEexJCoLm4AsPwX&ust=1542237692668337

Following up what I said about knowing every detail of their life, I also share similar thoughts with my roommates. We all dislike the same person, hate the same food, and dislike certain places around campus.

10. You can't imagine living with anyone else.

https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwiUpJnFwdLeAhUDSN8KHXAWBmgQjhx6BAgBEAM&url=https%3A%2F%2Fgfycat.com%2Fgifs%2Fsearch%2Fi%2Blove%2Byou%2Bguys%2Bi%2Bmiss%2Byou&psig=AOvVaw2SuerODT8rIZwZ62hYaf4g&ust=1542237764489188

I can't imagine living with anyone else and wouldn't ever want to. Honestly, I don't know how we'll all deal without seeing each other over Christmas break.

Not all roommate stories end in best friends for life, but I'm happy to say mine did. If you have great roommates don't take them for granted as you could've been stuck with your worst nightmare. Remember, don't be afraid to put yourself out there and live with people you don't know. Chances are, they could end up being your best friends.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register.
