Going off to college for the first time can be intimidating, especially with the prospect of sharing a tiny dorm with a complete stranger for nine months out of the year. After having their own room for years and hearing countless roommate horror stories, many new college students dread the responsibilities and potential difficulties that come with having a roommate.
However, my experience with a roommate has been far from a horror story. I knew things would work out just fine the moment I first met my freshman year roommate. She was so sweet and kind, and we soon clicked and became almost inseparable.
In my almost two years at Liberty University, she has quickly become my closest friend and confidante, the kindred spirit I had been looking for. I sincerely believe that my whole college experience would not be as amazing as it is now if I had never met my roommate of two years (hopefully four)!
There are definitely several perks to having a best friend for a roommate, and the reasons I've come up with barely scratch the surface of how amazing my roommate's constant friendship has been. However, I've listed a few pros that sum up my experience pretty well.
You have an instant, on-call lunch buddy.
And dinner buddy. And breakfast buddy (if you can drag yourself out of bed before your 9 a.m. class). You never have to fear eating alone again since you know she'll always be up to grab food at the most random times, whether it's a late lunch at 4 p.m. or ice cream at 11 p.m.
You can dress and act basically however you want around her without fear of judgment.
You can be sitting in your pajamas un-showered at 2 p.m. on a Saturday, with no makeup and horrible bedhead, and she will still love you. Now that's true friendship.
But she's not afraid to confront you when there's something you need to change.
Whether you're too hard on yourself or become too easily upset over something trivial, she will challenge you to love yourself and to never be afraid to face your fears and move out of your comfort zone.
Your 3 a.m. conversations are the best.
Whether it's a serious discussion about life or fangirling together over the latest "Star Wars" movie, your midnight adrenaline and hilarity never fail to provide endless entertainment and edification.
You have the most amazing adventures together.
Whether it's exploring historic downtown, finding creepy roads at night, or playing tag in an academic building, you two manage to get yourselves into the most bizarre (yet hilarious) scrapes.
You always have a "date" for every social event.
Don't want to attend that social gathering alone? She'll always be willing to stick by your side.
She'll listen to you ramble about the most random things and never tire of it.
Whether it's something exciting that happened to you today or your latest idea for a dystopian novel, she's always eager to hear what you have to say.
You've already discussed rooming together after college.
After all, you love her far too much to say goodbye at the end of four years!
You have a best friend for life.
No matter what happens, you know she'll always be there for you. Even though hundreds of miles may lie between you, you both know that nothing can separate two kindred spirits forever.
