What makes New York City truly the best city in the world is the devotion people have to it—I mean why else would I be writing this in the first place? Yes, we New Yorkers know how expensive it is, how dirty it can be, how loud it is even when you're trying to sleep, and how rude us residents can get, but we also know that there is no place like it. It doesn't matter to us— we’re from New York and we still think it is better than your city. If you don't like it, well, tough luck!
Here’s some things you miss when you leave:
1. Being within walking distance from anything.
I can’t tell you the last time I walked to the grocery store—where I live the nearest Walmart is about 24 miles, and don't even get me started on gas money. When leaving New York, I realized even the simplest things, such as walking, I had taken for granted.
2. The food.
Oh, how I miss the bagels, pizza and hot dogs from the carts in Manhattan! I miss basically being able to get food at any time of the day because there is a store on every corner. Even if you're in the mood for Italian, Chinese, or Greek food, there is a spot for you. Nothing beats New York pizza, and if you get it anywhere else nothing even comes close to comparison.
3. Manhattan.
Times Square, Soho, Central Park—I just cant get enough! Not only is the view beautiful, but there are so many different activities to do there. Whether it is watching the Knicks lose another home game at MSG, going to M&M World, the museums, or even going to the Central Park Zoo, you will never be bored.
4. The Ocean.
Moving towards the middle of the U.S. you don't get the opportunity to go to a “real beach.” Coney Island, Jones Beach, Riis Park, Rockaway—you name it, we've all been there. I practically spent all my summer days there, and these small lakes just aren't cutting it.
5. The Statue of Liberty
Let’s face it, no resident of New York has really ever been there, but it is a monumental piece of our history. It is what sets us apart from other states.
6. The people.
Yes, New York is filled with some of the rudest people you will ever meet, but they are family and you have no choice but to love them—even the tourists. Manhattan is always crawling with tourists, and that proves how great our city is. When leaving NYC, I came to miss the warm feeling of getting flipped off in traffic. Outsiders on the other hand, don't agree—some people can be so touchy.
Coming from New York, I could never imagine moving and living in a place covered with trees and hills. Everyone should experience the magic of living here at least once in their lifetime. I still miss it—NYC is one of a kind, and there is truly no place like home.
