What These Cleats Mean To Me

When asked, "choose one word that describes yourself," usually I respond with athlete. From the time I could walk I've been involved in organized sports. From swim team, to soccer, to volleyball, to lacrosse. I have done it all. I am fortunate enough to be able to continue my passion for sports in college. However I'm always asked, why? Why play a sport when you could be doing something else with your time?

"When you feel like quitting, think about why you started."

Faded neon Nike cleats. Endless mud stains. Broken laces. That's what you see, but I see much more. These faded cleats are filled with timeless memories, heartbreaking losses, and unforgettable celebrations.

These cleats have given me strength when I've felt like I've had none. On my worst days I slip on my cleats, and all my stresses fade away. Once I'm wearing my cleats all outside worries seem to disappear. Nothing matters more than what's on the field.

My cleats give me a strong foundation. Broken in and molded to my feet. Laced in tight. I am safe. Nothing can hurt me.

Hour after hour, day after day these cleats get worn down. While I get built up. These cleats give me a new found confidence each time I put them on. A perfect pass. A good shot. An goal saving interception. These cleats give me the feeling that I can do anything.

While wearing these cleats I've made the greatest of friends, and my own worst enemies. My teammates are my family. They have a my back on a dropped ball, or panic pass. They have my back after a broken heart, or after a rough day of classes. These girls are there for me both on and off the field.

The bond we create year after year, game after game is indescribable. My teammate are a constant reminder why I continue to play the game I love. We play from the name on the front of our jersey, not the back.

I don't wear these cleats for the uniform. I don't wear these cleats for the trophies. I don't wear these cleats for the popularity. I wear these cleats, because these cleats are a part of who I am.

These cleats aren't just another pair of shoes tossed into my closet used to collect dust. Theses cleats are used to bring light to my day. To share laughs with my teammates. To achieve the feeling of victory, and suffer though the pain of a loss.

I have become better, faster, stronger because of these cleats. These cleats push me to my limit, but I am forever grateful. I know after a hard practice I have accomplished something, by each pass and each catch. The little strides of improvement never cease to amaze me.

I know there will come a day when I will no longer need these cleats, and when that day comes I will know that I have given it my all. I have left it all out on the field for generations of players after me. My legacy will live on in these cleats.

I will remember all the lessons I have learned from these cleats. Never give up. Push harder. Run faster. Laugh longer. Play for the love of the game.

That's what these cleats mean to me.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
