In November a new president will be elected. This person will either be Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton. These two people are very different and would lead the United States on extremely different paths but that doesn’t necessarily mean that both paths will be good or bad. No one truly knows what will happen when one of these two is elected but I want to take a wild stab at what would happen if Donald Trump is elected in November.
1. Authoritarian Government
This is a bold predication but let me just clarify, I do believe that Donald Trump would lead the United States on the bath to an authoritarian government style. I say this for a few reasons. The first one is related to media. He has thrived off of media attention but he also shuns the media. He has removed press credentials from the Washington Post and Politico. This action is a version of censorship. The media are supposed to give the truth to the media. Trump is censoring certain news outlets from giving stories to the people. The Washington Post and Politico are very quality political news sources.
In addition, Trump has been involved in around 3,500 court cases. He has been a defendant and a plaintiff. He has been the plaintiff more than a defendant. This shows that he is willing to sue and go after everyone that does anything that he doesn’t agree with. He tends to threaten a lot of people and a lot of companies with lawsuits. When you combine these two ideas it leaves you with a leader that does not accept dissent. He only focuses on what’s positive for him and destroys everything that disagrees. Democracy will only work if there are two or more opposing groups.
2. Guns Everywhere
After the Paris attacks Trump said that if there were civilians carrying guns, not as many people would have died. Trump has advocated for less strict gun laws and I believe that if he is elected president, we will see that happen. The NRA is so powerful and Trump would be the leader of the United States and therefore, we would see guns all over the streets and more and more innocent Americans will die from gun violence. I am also predicting that he will never realize that more guns is not the answer. More guns to fight against guns is not the answer.
3. Foreign Policy
Donald Trump clearly states that he wants to put the United States first. Let me say one thing, defeating ISIS is a great idea, but Trump can not do that while preserving American's best interest. There are links between ISIS terrorism and mass shootings in the United States, but it is not possible to easily defeat ISIS without sacrificing America’s interest. The worst thing for the United States right now is to get more involved with the Middle East. He also has plans to readjust NATO and either work with Putin or punish him. Trump is pretty unclear on that front.
I am predicting that in the next 4 or 8 years Trump will discover how difficult it is to defeat a group in the Middle East. Similar to Iraq, the United States will be engaged in a conflict for many years. I predict that Trump will drain American resources and fight with no awareness of consequences. Next, I think that Trump with threaten to leave NATO unless each part pays its fair share and then eventually trump will pull the United States out of NATO. The world is intertwined in so many different ways that it is essential that countries work together. NATO is a large growing organization and that could be costly. As for Putin, I am thinking that Trump and Putin will get along. Until one day, they will disagree, and fall apart. The United States will fade away from Russia and relations will be cut off.
4. Jobs Will Not Come Back
Trump prides himself on the stance that he will bring manufacturing jobs back to the United States. No. Trump will not do this. For this to happen a lot has to change. He would have to do something like implementing humongous tariffs on imported goods from China. Or maybe an embargo on China. He would have to make goods imported from China so expensive that it would be beneficial to start producing those goods inside the United States. Trump also wants to be hard on trade agreements. He says that they will bring back jobs. The top economists argue that trade agreements have such a small effect on jobs. I am predicting that he will still try to remove or minimize the effects of free trade agreements such as NAFTA and once they are removed the United States will not be a better place. His supporters will see that they aren’t getting their jobs back.
If Trump is elected President, the world will not be a better place. He will fail. He will make the United States a dangerous place where no one is safe.
