What It's Like Dating A Twin
Callie Conerton

Yes, I'm dating a twin. An identical twin. Is it weird? Kind of. Mostly I find it amusing. They make life more fun... interesting is a good word too. It's been two years now, and it's been pretty great. Over this time, I've gotten a lot of questions about it, and I don't mind talking about it because I get some pretty weird questions, so I thought I'd create a list of the most commonly asked questions of dating a twin:

1. Do you ever get them mixed up?

No, not really. At first, it was super hard to tell them apart because if you don't know them, they look similar for a reason. But twins are like night and day. Their personalities are SO different it's crazy. Of course, they sound the same on the phone, so it takes some concentration to hear the differences in their voices. One is slightly deeper than the other, I guess is a good way to explain it.

2. Have you ever mistaken the other one for your boyfriend?

Only once or twice, I'm glad to say! There was one time it was really busy in the lobby and they were facing behind me. I was just so excited to see them that I hugged them from behind without really taking a second to notice anything, so they were super confused and I was super confused, but we laughed about it.

3. How can you tell them apart?

It's a lot of the little things. It's again all about the personality and how it's reflected outwardly. One carries themselves more upright and they walk with a purpose, I think of it like a saunter, bouncy I guess. The other is more laid back. They walk calmly, kind of lazily. Their eyes are slightly different too, kind of more slanted, maybe? It's really the faces in general. One is more sharper and the other is softer in features. Because I'm small, if you look closely up at their noses, mine has one which is slightly smaller than the other due to a childhood accident. But that's really only if you want to closely examine their noses. Their hair is different in that one gels it up and the other swoops the front to the side. Their dress is probably the most recognizable from far away too. You'll most likely see my boyfriend dressed in sweats and a sweatshirt while his brother wears pea coats, a scarf, and jeans.

4. Do they have a lot of the same habits?

Yes, obviously. They're both nerdy when it comes to video games. They both have this weird battle game on their phones that they play almost constantly. There's also a computer game which I don't fully understand but its got lots of clicking on stuff to get more stuff. They have a lot of the same sense of humor. They also make a loud, almost bird-like screech when they stretch.

5. Did you ever find the other one attractive too?

This is my favorite question because it caught me off guard. I'd never really thought about it, but I'd have to say yes. I met him before I met my current boyfriend. They look the same, so it'd be weird if I said no. Now? Ehhh. The personalities are what I'm drawn to, and because they're so different, I don't look at him that way or feel that way because I do know him and I know that it wouldn't work.

6. What's it like dating a twin?

Well... It's not any different from dating any normal person with siblings. They're just really close. They understand each other better and they have a bond that is really, really tight. They have a shared history, a lifetime of inside jokes that only they understand. They'll share secrets even my own boyfriend won't tell me. I can't replace that relationship, nor do I want to. They'll always have each other. It's kind of like a package deal, but as long as you both get along, you gain another friend.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
