Joining a sorority was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, but all the comments about being a “sorority girl” are what bother me. I joined Sigma Kappa because I felt that it was not a typical sorority and because their philanthropy was close to my heart. Society thinks that being a “sorority girl” is wearing Lily Pulitzer, going to “frat” parties every night, and failing classes because you're too hungover from the night before to even show up. When in reality it is so much more.
We raise money for our philanthropies.
When you join Greek Life you also join an opportunity to change something. Sigma Kappa’s philanthropy is Alzheimer’s, which I hold very close to my heart. Every philanthropy event we host raises money that goes towards Alzheimer’s research. We're not all skinny, blonde, and unathletic.
Sports aren’t for everyone, but sorority girls do more than just go to the gym and walk on the treadmill. We play a variety of intramural games which can get pretty intense. Most organizations on my campus have women who are athletes on several different sports teams at FAU. Sorority girls are not all ditzy, they are quite the opposite actually. My sisters are well coordinated ladies juggling everything college can throw at them.
We support our school.
We go to the football games and cheer on our team as well as making an effort to attending other sporting events as well. A majority of the time, the student section for most school events are made up of mostly members of Greek organizations. If there's one thing Fraternities and Sororities can agree on, it's how much school spirit they have.

We raise money for our school.
Dance Marathon (which is called OWLTHON at FAU) is a popular philanthropy event that is held at several university across the nations. During FAU's first year of participating in Dance Marathon we raised $6,000 and $66,137.15 just in our second year. Greeks never get the positive light shown on them. We may not be winning games or breaking school records but we are raising ridiculous amounts of money for amazing organizations.
We are not what we wear.
The stereotypical sorority girl is someone who wears Lilly Pulitzer, Tory Burch, Jack Rodgers, and J. Crew. Sure, some sorority women may wear this stuff, but theres definitely a lot of us who don't. A brand should not define who you are.
We do not only hang out with our sisters.
I have met some of my closest friends through Sigma Kappa, but they are not the only people I hang out with. I hang out with some athletes, my sisters, members of other organizations, as well as people who are not apart of Greek Life.

We do a lot more than people think.
Aside from going to class, working at least one job, going to chapter and philanthropy events, most members of Greek Life are involved in another student organization on campus. Some even hold positions in these organizations, as well as in their chapter. Pop culture tends to make society believe that we just skip class and go get drunk as much as possible, when we are really doing so much more.
Being Greek shouldn’t come with a set stereotype of what you should wear or how you should act. It should be about you as a person and going Greek will help you grow and better yourself as well as how you have helped give back to the community.
