21 Things That Sorority Girls Actually Are

The media portrays sorority girls as something completely different than they actually are. Choosing to be in a sorority was one of the best decisions I have ever made for myself and I would encourage anyone else to join one! All of the girls mentioned in this article are people that I have had the privilege of knowing and these are just a few of the many things that they actually are!

1. Sorority girls are loving

Maddie Wiger

Epsilon Alpha chapter of Alpha Xi Delta

University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire

Sorority girls are often portrayed as people who judge everyone else and are rude in general but that could not be further from the truth. They are actually people who genuinely care about others and their well-being. Maddie has a heart of gold and always looks out for all of her sisters. She is one of the most loving people I have ever met!

2. Sorority girls are intelligent

Asha Sivarajah

Gamma Sigma chapter of Alpha Phi

University of Wisconsin-Stout

Sorority girls are not the ditsy people shown in the media. Sororities actually keep track of the sister's grades, and there is a required GPA to be in the sorority! Asha just finished her third semester of college and she has maintained a 4.0 GPA through all three semesters! She is an outstandingly intelligent person and sororities take pride in having such academically inclined individuals like her!

3. Sorority girls are open-minded

Taylor Brownstetter (Right)

Epsilon Alpha chapter of Alpha Xi Delta

University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire

We aren't just a big group of stubborn, stuck up people. We are creative and open-minded individuals who respect each other and our ideas. Taylor is a wonderful, free-spirit girl who is open to many new things! She never says no to trying something new and she goes into it with an open mind!

4. Sorority girls are disciplined

Brianna Monson (Top)

Gamma Lambda chapter of Sigma Sigma Sigma

University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire

Like I mentioned earlier, sororities have regulations on members' GPA. They also have strict rules on things that you post and what can be showing in it. It is not like in the movies where girls can go out and party every weekend, posting pictures of it all over the place. Brie is on the honors council in her sorority where she helps monitor people who's grades are not up to par. She is a very disciplined person who does not allow herself to get out of control and she helps her sisters act the same, too.

5. Sorority girls are adventurous

Kayla Sauve

Epsilon Alpha chapter of Alpha Xi Delta

University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire

We don't just sit around every day doing the same old thing. Although they all love their sisters and being together, sorority girls also love traveling. Many of our sisters study abroad, just like Kayla! This upcoming semester she will be studying abroad in Australia! Although we will miss her, and all other sisters leaving us for awhile, we are excited for the new experiences they will be going through!

6. Sorority girls are hard working

Caitlin Albrecht

Alumna of Pi chapter of Alpha Delta Pi

Iowa State University

We most definitely don't get everything handed to us and that is such a frustrating stereotype. Sorority girls work so hard at everything they do and it gets them far! Caitlin worked hard at Iowa State to get where she is and she is currently continuing her education in pharmacy school at the University of Minnesota. Being in a sorority helps push sorority girls to realize their true potential!

7. Sorority girls are respectful

Kayla Billman (Right)

Epsilon Alpha chapter of Alpha Xi Delta

University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire

Some people think that being near the same girls so often would push people away from each other but that couldn't be more inaccurate. Being so close to the same girls often just drives them together more. This is because of the mutual respect that everyone has for each other. Kayla is one of the sweetest girls who shows immense respect towards every single person in her sorority. She has never made a single rude comment towards anyone in her sorority and she glows with kindness. Is there still drama within the sorority? Of course, but that does not mean that girls are disrespectful towards each other.

8. Sorority girls are encouraging

Delaney Finn (Right)

Sigma Sigma chapter of Kappa Delta

Iowa State University

Having a bad day? Your sisters have your back. Not sure how to make a big decision? They will be right by your side to help guide you. They encourage you in all the best ways, because they only want the best for you! Delaney is always there for all of her sisters but not only her sisters. She is also there for all of her other friends, too. Being encouraging is a characteristic of every sorority girl that they will carry with them forever.

9. Sorority girls are reliable

Natalie Busch

Epsilon Alpha chapter of Alpha Xi Delta

University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire

Similar to the previous point, you can always count on your sisters. They are some of the most reliable people you will ever meet! You can trust that if you ask them to do something, it will get done and it will get done well. Natalie is one of the older girls in her sorority, but with age comes more reliability. She is always there for her sisters, whether this is teaching them how to calculate their grade in a class or lending them some jewelry. You know you can count on Natalie!

10. Sorority girls are polite

Beth Kurkowski

Theta Zeta chapter of Alpha Phi

Florida Institute of Technology

Sorority girls aren't rude and they won't make you feel bad if you come up and talk to them. They are not stuck up like in the movies but instead are very polite, well rounded women. That doesn't mean that they aren't sarcastic and don't joke around with each other but when it comes down to it they are wonderful women. Beth is sarcastic but in the best way possible and she would never make someone feel bad for randomly coming up and talking to her! She is the definition of polite and anyone would be lucky to have a sister like her!

11. Sorority girls are self-confident

Madie Weingart (Left)

Epsilon Alpha chapter of Alpha Xi Delta

University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire

Self-confidence is something that so many girls lack these days and being in a sorority only helps with that. By being in a sorority you are surrounding yourself with people who want nothing but the best for you and will help you in any way to reach that. Of course everyone has something that they don't like all that much about themselves but sorority girls know how to stay confident in themselves even when they are feeling a little down. Madie is a prime example of someone who has self-confidence. She knows how awesome she is and she doesn't often get down on herself. She is modest but at the same time confident. Madie is a wonderful woman who sets a great example for everyone else around her!

12. Sorority girls are honest

Morgan Ziskovsky (Left)

Gamma Lambda chapter of Sigma Sigma Sigma

University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire

Being honest is one of the most valued character traits anyone could have. Sorority girls don't lie to all of the authoritative people above them, trying to get out of something like what is portrayed in the media. Sorority girls instead are very honest to each other and in general. Morgan is someone that you can go to for advice and you know she will tell you what is best for you. She is honest about the situation but tells her opinion in a kind, loving way. Being honest to your sisters and to everyone else in general is an important characteristic to have!

13. Sorority girls are zealous

Nicole Fox

Epsilon Alpha chapter of Alpha Xi Delta

University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire

Being zealous is having great energy and enthusiasm in pursuit of a cause or an objective. One of the key parts of a sorority is their philanthropy. Sorority girls work very hard towards raising money for their philanthropy and they do all that they possibly can to help out. Nicole is someone who is very passionate for Autism Speaks, her sorority's philanthropy. She attends all of the philanthropic events that her sorority puts on and she volunteers to work tabling shifts to raise awareness for Autism Speaks with some of her other sisters. Nicole is always enthusiastic towards anything that she does and she always has a positive attitude! Sisters like her are a joy to be around!

14. Sorority girls are approachable

Caroline Sass

Omega Delta chapter of Delta Delta Delta

Iowa State University

Sorority girls are not the stuck up, rude people that are shown in the movies. They do not make you feel bad for trying to make conversation with them or for approaching them about something. Caroline is a kind, loving girl who would NEVER make anyone feel unwelcome or unwanted. She is someone that you can talk to about anything without feeling like you are being judged.

15. Sorority girls are funny

Abby Peterson (Left)

Epsilon Alpha chapter of Alpha Xi Delta

University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire

Sorority girls are some of the most hilarious people I have ever met. Of course everyone has their own personality but the mix of all these personalities are what make these girls so much fun! If you are ever having a bad day, I can promise you that a sorority sister will be able to help you lighten that mood! Abby is such a lighthearted person who is always making her sisters laugh. She recently won the award for "most likely to steal the mic" because that is just the type of person she is! I swear, Abby strives off of everyone else's happiness!

16. Sorority girls are ambitious

Megan Sommerfeldt (Left)

Alpha Nu chapter of Alpha Chi Omega

University of Missouri

Sorority girls are determined to be the best them possible. They work hard and do all that they can do to better themselves and others. Megan has been working very hard towards a wonderful future. She is studying industrial engineering and she recently started a co-op with Harley-Davidson in Kansas City! She works hard and keeps her future in sight!

17. Sorority girls are trustworthy

Virginia Fritz

Epsilon Alpha chapter of Alpha Xi Delta

University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire

Sorority girls do not go around gossiping the way that many people think they do. Is there some gossip here and there? Of course. That is just something that cannot be prevented. Not only can you trust sorority girls with your secrets but you can trust them to get something done when you ask. Virginia is a wonderful sister and friend, and I, along with other sisters, know that I can count on her when it matters most. She is someone that you can trust with anything and whatever it may be, she will tackle it with a positive attitude.

18. Sorority girls are passionate

Brittany Brezinski

Gamma Lambda chapter of Sigma Sigma Sigma

University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire

Whether this be towards the sorority in general or towards their philanthropy, sorority girls are very passionate! You will often find them repping their sorority on their clothes and accessories. Brittany is someone who is very passionate about her sorority! Even her family is involved! Her mom made cute anchor decorations for her and her friends, representing Sigma Sigma Sigma.

19. Sorority girls are unique

Rachel Pieper (Bottom)

Epsilon Alpha chapter of Alpha Xi Delta

University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire

There is not a single sorority girl that is exactly like another! Sororities are made up of many different individuals, unlike what is shown in the media where everyone is cookie-cutter look-alikes. Rachel is a very unique person! She enjoys a wide variety of things and has a wide variety of friends! She, along with all other sorority sisters, are one of a kind and could not be replaced.

20. Sorority girls are optimistic

Abby Palma (Right)

Kappa chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta

University of Kansas

Being positive and thinking on the bright side is a character trait that does not go unnoticed. It is so much more fun being around people who are naturally optimistic and that is what sorority girls are! Everyone has their ups and downs, including sorority girls, but overall they are fun people to be with! I can't think of a time where I haven't seen Abby smiling and cheerful! She has always been a positive person, and she is a joy to be around! Girls like Abby are an honor to have in your life!

21. Sorority girls are role models

April Klein

Eta Psi chapter of Delta Gamma

Iowa State University

Sorority girls set an example for everyone around them, in the present and in the future. Little girls often look up to these women and who knows, they could be come a sorority girl some day. April is someone that is a joy to be around and she sets a good example for the other people around her. She is someone who little girls are able to look up to and parents know is a positive person in these little girls' lives. Sorority women are wonderful examples of how anyone can make a difference and they are people to look up to!

Sororities are portrayed in movies, social media and almost everywhere else as a negative thing to be a part of and that could not be more wrong. Being in a sorority is one of the best decisions that I have ever made for myself and I am proud to say that my sisters and friends portray all of these characteristics. Sorority women are some of the best people you could surround yourself with and I am glad to say that I am one of the many sorority women around the nation!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
