What Female Comic Book Geeks Want You To Know

We're here. We're valid. And we love comic books.

What Female Comic Book Geeks Want You To Know
DC Comics

Being a female in the world of nerds and geeks of all kinds, is kind of terrifying. It's a world dominated by men and the assumption that only men can like it. To me, this just seems really silly. Do we still live in a world where guys have to like superheroes and girls have to like princesses? I don’t need certain genitalia to understand and love comic books. There isn't a “Boys Only” sticker on the cover of every comic book I pick up.

1. When I say I like comic books, you don’t have to quiz me (but if you do, be prepared to lose)

I cannot express how many times I’ve said that, and a male has given me some kind of skill testing question. It’s been so much, that I’m paranoid and think every conversation is a test. But if you do challenge my knowledge and opinions, you better brace yourself for a hurricane of facts and thought out, backed up opinions.

2. I don’t like comics for anyone but myself.

I did not get into comic books to impress guys or anyone. I accidentally stumbled upon them one day and my world changed. Maybe I do get bonus points when it comes to flirting with geeky guys but believe me, I would be into them regardless if it was a “guy thing” or not.

3. If we date, you better be prepared for my comic book boyfriend (or husband) who may or may not take precedence over you

This may or may not be a joke.

(and his name is Richard Grayson. *sigh*)

4. We all have a story of getting objectified or bullied in a comic book store.

Men staring, laughing, making comments asking why you’re there. It’s happened to literally all of us. The first time I was even in a comic book store a guy tried to get me away from the superhero comics and tell me I would be better suited for some princess one.

5. I don’t care.

I don't care that you think my opinions of comic books are invalid just because I’m a girl. I don’t care if comic books and superheroes are marketed towards males. I don’t care that you think you know more about the history of Batman’s clan than I do (because you probably don’t). I don’t care what you think of female comic book fans in general.

I have every right to be in that comic book or gaming store or comic convention. I have the same rights you do. I’m just as valid.

Female comic fans rule.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
