What I Did On “Anna Howard Shaw Day”

You know how it feels.

Ah, Valentine’s Day.

A holiday first created by the Christian Saint, Valentine, who was imprisoned and sent the first “valentine” to the daughter of his jailer.

And to honor this great saint, we now have to get chocolate, flowers and jewelry for our romantic partners, if we have one.

It seems like the people who love Valentine’s Day are the people who are in a successful relationship or any young children who are excited about getting a ton of candy.

For us single people out there, Valentine’s Day is just a huge reminder that we can’t find somebody to love us. But instead of moping around and complaining, some people have found new ways to deal with this day.

Many people buy themselves gifts or go to singles parties.

Hell, some people even change the name of the day, the most common being “Single Awareness Day.”

While I enjoy that title and the acronym that comes with it, I prefer to refer to Valentine’s Day as a different title.

Since I am a huge fan of all things Tina Fey, I refer to February 14 as “Anna Howard Shaw Day.” This was the name of a Valentine’s Day episode in the fourth season of 30 Rock.

Liz gets the name from the February 14th birthday of women’s civil rights leader, Anna Howard Shaw. She also decides to get a root canal, but in typical Liz Lemon fashion, she has no one to drive her home and hallucinates that her former boyfriends have come to see her.

Classic.

The other two plots include Jack meeting a potential love interest who is similar to him, and Jenna being worried that her stalker has stopped stalking her, trying to win him back. If you have not seen this episode, you are missing out. If you haven’t seen 30 Rock or anything by Tina Fey, you are seriously missing out.

Now, what is this perpetually single, and pretty attractive woman doing for "Anna Howard Shaw Day" you may ask?

Side Note: I’m writing this on the 14 at 8:52 a.m., but this will likely be published after the 14.

Right now, I am currently listening to the Survivor With All The Fixins podcast, which is about the messed up lives of former reality stars, and the horrible dating life of one of the hosts, Corinne Kaplan from Survivor: Gabon. (She has the weirdest dating life; you’d think it’s from an SNL skit).

Later, I plan on writing a bunch of things for school and might switch my podcast choice to either the recent episodes of LadyGang and Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me.

I will follow up with you guys in the comments on what I actually did on "Anna Howard Shaw Day." I want you to tell me what you referred to this particular 14th of February as. Valentine’s Day? St. Valentine’s Day? (Another great Valentine’s Day episode of 30 Rock, by the way). Ash Wednesday? Singles Awareness Day? And tell me how you spent the day in the comments below!

For now, so I don't sound completely bitter, I leave you with a little bit of love, literally.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
