4 Weekend Trips in the Midwest

When there's a weekend free why not fill it with something fun. Below is a list of weekend trips around the Midwest that are perfect for anyone.

1) House on the Rock – located in Spring Green, Wisconsin

The house was originally built by Alex Jordan and soon after people began to show up to see the architectural wonder that the house was. After many years the house became more like an exhibit and more buildings and gardens were created for visitors to explore. Some sights to expect while at the House on the Rock include the world’s largest carousel, a room filled with model airplanes, sea creature sculptures larger than one could expect and a Zen garden. If you are willing to brave the height and narrowness of the infinity room, you can see some of the most breathtaking views of the property. Taking between 3-3.5 hours to complete the three sections of the attraction it’s the perfect trip for a weekend. When looking for a place to stay for the night, the House on the Rock Inn is conveniently located just minutes from the attraction.

2) Snake Alley – located in Burlington, Iowa

Snake Alley is a road built in 1894 that is called by some “the crookedest street in the world.” The road was created with the various turns and paved with bricks in order to make travel on the steep hill (too steep for a straight road) possible. The road is one-way heading down the hill, and it can be driven in any season except winter. Once you’ve finished the journey down Snake Alley you can spend the rest of the weekend sightseeing along the Mississippi River and the beautiful town of Burlington.

3) Adventureland – located in Altoona, Iowa

If you enjoy thrilling rides and water parks Adventureland is the place to spend your weekend. Go to the park in June and you could be one of the first people to ride The Monster, a brand new addition to the park that features five inversions and a first drop hill that is 101 degrees. If this rollercoaster isn’t the right fit there are many other rides to choose from. Along with the amusement park admission you can get into a water park that features a lazy river and over 10 water slides. Spend all day at the park and when the night comes walk over to the Adventureland Resort for a much needed sleep and the next day you can hit the park again to finish those rides you didn’t get to.

4) Belle Isle – located in Detroit, Michigan

Belle Isle has a variety of attractions, which almost all are included in the admission cost for the park, with the exception of the giant slide. Whether you spend your weekend at the Belle Isle Aquarium, the Conservatory or the beach, this weekend is sure to be filled with unforgettable memories. Belle Isle is one of Michigan’s state parks, which means you need a Recreation Passport if you intend to drive through the park. Otherwise, you can walk, bike or use public transportation to avoid the cost of a Recreation Passport. If you are looking for a weekend filled with animals and the outdoors this is the trip for you.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
