For many of us out here on the Palouse, this is a common question. After all, for most of the year the weather is so terrible that going outside is just a pain, literally.
But, not anymore! The weather is warming up, things are green again, and the sun is out and shining as I write this. However, this leads to the inevitable question of, "what are we going to do now?" I know what I love to do when things start to warm up on the Palouse, and now I can share some of these activities to help all you guys out a little bit.
1. Watch a baseball game.
It's America's favorite past time, and the Cougars are a pretty good team who happen to play in one of the best conferences in the country. A great event to go to with your friends, baseball has one of the best sports atmospheres in Pullman. The games are as often as four times a week, so they are really easy to fit into any schedule regardless of how busy you are. The stadium is also fairly small so all the seats are fantastic, which in my opinion makes it more fun than any professional game.
2. Take a bike ride.
Seriously, get some friends together and go bike riding. Pullman and the surrounding area has miles of biking trails and just look at that scenery! The Palouse is gorgeous this time of year, as everything is freshly grown. Hell, make a day out of it and try to bike to Moscow and back. It's a trek, but definitely one of those things you should attempt once while in college.
3. Climb a butte.
Look at that picture. It is the definition of natural beauty. That is the view from Step-toe butte at sunset. It's a nice, easy hike, and if you go early enough to catch a sunrise or late enough to catch a sunset, it is absolutely amazing. Step-toe isn't the only butte around here that possesses a stunning view, but it's an easy drive to make. Kamiak is another popular choice for hikers and is also within easy driving distance for a college student on the weekend.
4. Go see the spring game.
Every year at the end of spring practice, the football team travels to Spokane to play a scrimmage game. It's the first game of the year, and the only time you get to see football for months. It also lets you get a look at the guys who might be potential breakout stars the following year, or the ones you had high hopes for the year before. It's great to see how far they have progressed.
With the great weather, it's time to come out of hibernation and get outside. I hope these ideas will help you "come back to life" so to speak from a cold, dark winter.
