We All Could Use A Little More Appreciation

The importance of recognizing and appreciating the little things in life.

We All Could Use A Little More Appreciation
Emily Moore

Your life may be fast-paced and stressful at times, but that should not be an excuse for a lack of appreciation for the good aspects of it. How often do you wish you had been more thankful, lived in the moment or took the time to show gratitude for the people, places and things around you? More often than not it seems like the millennial generation is so focused on the future and all the things we have to do each day that we forget to take the time to appreciate good things when they happen.

Taking the time to say "thank you" or "I love you", compliment someone or just take a minute to stop what you are doing and take in everything going on around you has the potential to be the best part of your day. So why is there a lack of appreciation in so many people today when the benefits of reflecting on the good things in life can lead to a great deal of happiness?

I myself am guilty of rushing through life sometimes because I feel so overwhelmed with all the things on my plate. Often times taking a second to reflect on the value of all the things that are headed in the right direction in life outweigh anything that may be negative.

In writing this article, I am taking the time to reflect on the importance of appreciation and how I have realized its significance in my life. If you are not taking the time to appreciate the little things in life then consequently their importance diminishes.

Some of my favorite things to do are to stargaze while walking back from a night class or take a deep breath of fresh air when outside. Little moments like these rejuvenate me and allow for me to realize that living in the moment adds so much value and happiness to daily life. Each and every life event, big or small, that you make significant and value will make you a better person for it.

Here's a quick list of small things to do that will add happiness to your life:

1. Admire the sunrise/sunset.

2. Take an extra small sip of your coffee or bite of cake, and savor the flavor on your tongue.

3. Tell the people in your life that they matter to you and do it often.

4. Wear you favorite outfit and feel confident in it whenever you wish.

5. Splurge on tickets to the big game because you had a great week at work.

6. Hugs –– hugs make everything better, we could all use more hugs.

7. While riding in the passenger seat let your eyes stare at the stars and admire the world.

8. Be grateful for your health and to be alive.

9. Smile more –– it is infectious.

10. Cuddle up in your bed after a long day, and be happy you have a place to sleep.

This list could go on and on. I challenge you to start reflecting on the little things in life you can start appreciating more. Overall living life with a glass-half-full mentality and showing gratitude for what makes you who you are will lead to more happiness. And hey, if you can start being more positive and shining a light on what is going well for you, others may start to do the same. Let the chain reactions ensue!

So go out there and life your life with a greater sense of appreciation. If you find it hard to do so, then take some time to reflect on what really matters to you and why. Next time you have the chance to be thankful for whatever it may be that matters to you, be make sure to do so. Your life is flying by minute by minute and if you do not feel you should appreciate it then you may not value your life as much as you should and deserve to.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
