"Don't worry about it! No really, I'm fine! Oh my gosh, it's okay!" These are some of the phrases you know all too well. Constantly allowing people to take advantage of you is something that happens to you on the regular, even when you don't intend for it to occur. Let's face it: you're a doormat. But, putting in so much effort for certain individuals who don't deserve your time and energy gets to be completely and utterly exhausting. You'll run yourself down if you don't put a stop to it at some point, so here are a few ways that you can say "enough is enough."
Don't be afraid to say no.
For a doormat like you and me, the word no is practically nonexistent. This little tip is so much easier said than done, but you will feel so empowered once you say no to someone who you're constantly giving too much attention to. I don't care who they are, stop giving 120% when you only receive about 30% in return. It's about time they learned how to respect you. It's only two little letters, you can do it!
Backbone, backbone, backbone!
People taking advantage of your niceness is something much too familiar simply because you lack a backbone a.k.a. the ability to say "woah, I deserve better than that. Stop treating me like this." Don't get me wrong, helping others is such an amazing thing but when it comes to people who should be reciprocating that help and don't, that's where you should draw the line.
Set time aside for yourself.
Because doormats like you and me are always giving our time to others, we often neglect ourselves, which leads to more frustration, stress, and exhaustion. By giving yourself some time to relax you can reflect on the relationships that you're trying to foster with those who surround you and then determine whether or not they're holding you back from living a rich and meaningful life.
Don't chase, be chased.
Too many girls are doormats especially when it comes to being in relationships. Believe me honey, no matter how many times he says "I promise I still love you, things are just complicated right now," he's lying. If he wanted you like he says he does, he would have pursued you by now. I know he might seem like your knight in shining armor, but I can guarantee that he's manipulating you because he knows you're too head over heels to say no. In the words of Rapi Kaur from the infamous Milk and Honey, "Do not bother holding onto the thing that does not want you - you cannot make it stay." Regardless of how hard it may be to say "I don't deserve to be treated like this," you will feel so relieved and even free to an extent. It sucks don't get me wrong, but I promise, it gets better.
