Whether you are starting a new semester or on the hunt for an internship or a job, there is no question that stress can become a part of the daily routine. And if you are anything like me, stress is unproductive and can be downright painful. So here are some tricks you should try the next time you feel stuck:
1. Try some light meditation or yoga.
This is one of the most well-known strategies for stress relief, likely because it is one of the ones that has been found most effective. There are a ton of options, ranging from going to a yoga class at the gym or simply finding a quiet spot in or around your home that you can use for meditation. Both activities, although they may seem daunting at first, are quite simple and can do wonders for your physical and mental health.
2. Listen to music.
Music is one of the most fun ways to take a break from your work to relax. A nice mellow playlist to help you relax or a happy playlist to cheer you up are some of the best medicine for stress. Whether you have a go-to playlist of your favorite songs to put you in a good mood or you like to browse Spotify or Pandora to find some nice tunes, any music you enjoy will make you a lot happier and ready to take on your next big project.
3. Chew a stick of gum.
This is a great one to use if you're on the go and don't have time for any major breaks. Many studies have found that chewing gum can be a great way to bring down stress levels, and participants have reported feeling less stressed and more alert. So the next time you're on your way to the library or you're off to a big interview, grab a pack of gum before you go, just make sure it's sugar-free!
4. Do something different that's productive.
Sometimes the best way to manage the stress of a situation is dropping everything to do something else. If you have something else that needs to get done, that can be a great way to take a break. Whether it's cleaning your room, doing laundry, or running an errand, it will be a great way to take your mind off of your stressor and get something valuable done in the process.
5. Read a book.
Personally, I have found that I don't have much time during the school year to read books simply for enjoyment. But having a book in which you're engaged is a great tool for times when you're feeling super stressed and want something calm to do. Reading is a great way to unwind, and having a time to read something of your own choosing is good as well. So find a book that interests you and use that as some motivation to get work done
6. Take a walk.
Exercise is a great way to relieve stress, but if you're looking for something more low-key, taking a walk is a great option. Stepping away from your work and getting outside will allow you to have a good break and clear your mind. Going with a family member or friend is also a great option for bouncing ideas off of each other and having someone to support you. A nice walk either with someone or alone will definitely improve your mood and productivity.
While it's definitely important to have a little stress in our lives -- after all, it's what keeps us focused and motivated to succeed - figuring out how to manage or avoid stress in the way that best fits you will significantly increase your productivity and happiness!
