If you are a sports fan like myself, seeing the NFL commercials and preseason games are really giving me mixed feelings. I'm excited and happy because we get to see Cam Newton's new celebration move since the dab is now "dead." We get to see if the group of rookies will help our teams or if they'll be busts. I can't forget about Von Miller, J.J. Watt and Khalil Mack tormenting offenses week in and week out. It's going to be exciting. Although, I'm also bummed. Because football is back, that means most of our other sports are gone for a few months. It seems like yesterday we were just watching the Super Bowl...time is flying!
Let's take a look back at some of sport's biggest moments since the last time we saw cleats and shoulder pads!
1. Sports Stars Have Called It Quits
Many of our sports heroes have decided to retire after inspiring millions around the world with their exciting play. The NBA will now be without Kobe Bryant and Tim Duncan next season, as both have decided to hang up their kicks after 20 and 19 years respectively. Abby Wambach has left the soccer world after winning two Olympic gold medals and a FIFA World Cup with the U.S. National Women's Team, she is considered one of the best soccer players of all time. Peyton Manning, Charles Woodson, Calvin Johnson, and Marshawn "Beastmode" Lynch have all hung up their cleats after such great careers. David "Big Papi" Ortiz, Alex Rodriguez, and Prince Fielder are all ending their careers on the diamond as well.
2. Coastal Carolina Beat Who?!
College World Series Championship trophy now has a new home. Coastal Carolina University claimed the championship by defeating Arizona 4-3 in the final game. Their story has made the list because of the way they became champions. After defeating the number one seed University of Florida in the first game and then falling to Texas Christian University, Coastal Carolina rallied to win their school's first College World Series!
3. Late Game Heroics For Nova
March Madness is one of sport's most exciting championship tournaments. This year's game between The Villanova Wildcats and the North Carolina Tarheels did not disappoint. The game was what we all thought it would be, great execution by both teams, amazing plays, and coaching by two of the game's best. There were some late fireworks as Marcus Paige hit a three-point shot to tie the game up at 74. But he would not have the last laugh. Kris Jenkins hit a three at the buzzer to give Villanova their second National Championship in school history.
4. King James Brings One Home!
"CLEVELANDDDD, THIS IS FOR YOU." These words rang from Lebron James after he and the Cleveland Cavaliers defeated Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors in game 7 of the NBA Finals. What made this win so special for Lebron and the Cavaliers was that they were down 3-1, and game 5 was going to be at Oracle Arena. They were able to come back and win the first NBA championship in franchise history. Lebron led all players from both teams in every statistical category; points, rebounds, assists, and steals. He was awarded the Bill Russell Most Valuable Player award. Now, we wait to see if these two teams will make it three straight meetings in June.
5. NBA Free Agency...
This was one of the craziest NBA free agency seasons that I have ever witnessed. The salary cap ballooned this offseason, so let's just say the wealth was definitely spread! There were many deals given to players like Tyler Johnson, Timofey Mosgov, and Allen Crabbe that totaled over 50 million dollars. The two biggest stories of free agency were Kevin Durant leaving the Oklahoma State Thunder for the Golden State Warriors, and Dwayne Wade leaving the Miami Heat for his hometown team, the Chicago Bulls. These deals were so crazy because KD went and joined the team that eliminated him from the playoffs the year before. D Wade had been with the Heat his entire career and to see him in a new uniform will be very different.
There were many more sports moments that could've made this list (The Rio Olympics, Golden State winning 73 games, etc) but these were chosen because sports fans can relate to them all! I personally can't wait to see what the football season has for us. Oh yeah, one more thing....
The Dallas Cowboys will be champions at the end of this year, you heard it here first!
