Everything in this world is supply and demand. We all have very little patience for things that are owed or may not even be owed to us. We want want we want at that second. What ever happened to doing something just to help someone else in return? We take, and take, and take, but what about just giving and no, I'm not talking about Thanksgiving.
One of my passions is loving people and making their day positive. You never know what could be going through a person's mind at any given moment. It makes me happy and satisfies me to see other in a positive state. Whether it be at my job, while I'm volunteering at my church or at my school, I always try to make a difference. This world is full of so much hurt and what the world doesn't need anymore of that.
Volunteering may not give you a check every other week, but it builds character and the experience that you obtain can't be gained in other places. There are countless ways to volunteer and you don't have to look far.
I've volunteered in a homeless ministry, at an aquarium, in the community, etc. Some people just see it as closed ended work, meaning that they don't gain anything from it, and they also think it's a waste of time and that they will never get those few hours back, but the truth is that it's not a waste.
When you hear the word "homeless" you may think dirty, poor, sad or unemployed but all you should see is a person, and then that, that person is in need. That person happens to have the same body made up of what yours is. If you spent just one day during the week serving at a soup kitchen, your perspective would change, drastically. You will start to learn so much about yourself and your environment. You will start to understand that the people that you are serving are not all miserable and some of them will be the nicest people you will ever meet.Volunteering says not "What do I get in return?" but "What can I give, without anything in return?"
I can honestly tell you that every single person has a talent and whether they believe it or not it is suppose to be used in some sort of way or fashion. Most likely not everyone always gets to use their talents to put those hours into Paychex or ADP, but why waste them? If you work as an accountant not because you want to but because you have too and you love landscaping, go around to some elderly individual's home who isn't able to do it themselves, give back and make their yard one of the best looking yards in the town.
You don't have to sign up with some big fancy organization that has a volunteer program, you can sign up by walking across the street or going downtown. I would encourage each and every person if they haven't already to volunteer their time, with a selfless and open mind and expect nothing in return. I guarantee it will change your life.
