If you didn't catch the spectacular final game of the 2015 Women's World Cup, you missed out on the United States women's national team reclaiming the title of world champions. The last time they won the World Cup was in 1999. With the addition of this year's win, the United States now holds three Women's World Cup titles. With the third title, the USWNT is now the sole leader in Women's World Cup titles, with Germany in 2nd place at a mere two titles.
The final game took place on July 5th, 2015 at 7:00 PM EST, a day after America celebrated it's Independence Day. In my opinion, that it was an excellent 239th birthday present to Lady Liberty.
The game kicked off to an exciting start when Carli Lloyd scored the fastest Women's World Cup goal at the 3' mark. The game got even more exciting when Lloyd scored her second goal a few minutes later, putting the USWNT up 2-0 against an opponent many had feared would best them. An opponent that had bested them four years previously.
Down 2-0, the Japanese tried to mount an assault to stop the hemorrhaging, but were unsuccessful as a Japanese defender failed to clear, resulting in a beautiful volley from Lauren Holiday to push the score to 3-0 in America's favor. And then, to make matters even worse for Japan, Lloyd scored an impromptu, audacious and flawless chip shot from 56 yards out. The shot caught an unsuspecting goalie, Kaihori, out of position. This goal put the USWNT up 4-0, and sealed the deal for them, proving to be an impossibly insurmountable lead. Not only did this goal seal the deal, it also broke records. This was the fastest any team has gone up 4-0, and Lloyd had the fastest hat trick.
The Japanese responded after halftime with two goals of their own (one of them being an awkward own goal from Johnston), and seemed to be gaining momentum, but a response from Tobin Heath made the score 5-2, where it stayed until the end.
After losing to Japan in a heartbreak loss in the 2011 WWC, yesterday's victory proved that sometimes revenge is a dish best served burning hot.
P.S. if you haven't heard this either, the U.S. women's national softball team ALSO won the Women's Softball World Cup yesterday as well, beating Japan 6-1. Yeah, that's right, America beat Japan in two different World Cup finals in one day. Watch for them to be a little salty in the near future.
