The United States Women’s National Soccer Team absolutely dominates, in every sense of the word. CNN called the team “serially successful,” having won three World Cups and four Olympic gold medals so far. Apparently, however, their immense success is completely inconsequential when it comes to their pay.
The USWNT receives about a quarter of the pay that the men’s team does. Because of this, members of the USWNT — Carli Lloyd, Alex Morgan, Hope Solo, Megan Rapinoe and Becky Sauerbrunn — have filed a lawsuit through the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission against the U.S. Soccer Federation.
The best part about this revolutionary course of action? This female push for equality has gained the support of the men’s team as well. CNN reported, “Men's soccer stars Tim Howard and Landon Donovan have come out of support of this motion, [sportscaster/journalist] Bacon says, and this action "has the support, I think, of almost the entire nation."
Women everywhere are currently in the process of fighting for equal pay on so many fronts. To have these undoubtedly successful and powerful women be such public victims of the same struggle speaks volumes. And the fact that they are fighting back so unwaveringly against this oppression says even more. It is so rare, unfortunately, that women get recognition equal to their male counterparts, especially in the athletic world. The recognition that the USWNT has received for their incredible achievements is revolutionary in itself.
The fame they’ve achieved is now giving them such an advantage in this case — no one can deny their amazing skill and accomplishments that have exceeded those of the men’s National Team. Therefore, the unequal pay they’ve been receiving is clearly a result of their gender alone. If this case ends up being a victory for the USWNT, it will be a victory for women all over the world, and could be a huge stepping stone in the fight for female equality.
