It's easy to get bored when you come home from college. At school there is always something going on, but once you get home there really isn't anything to do. I have already started complaining about summer boredom.
Here are some ideas to turn your summer boredom into a summer never forgotten!
1.Get lost in your hometown.
I have lived in my hometown for 17 years and there are places that I have never been. This summer I want to go on drives for hours, getting lost in the neighborhoods I have always just driven past. I want to find a new place to hang out with my friends, because let's face it, Starbucks is a little too crowded. The only way I will ever do this is if I get in my car and just go.
2. Day trip!
Where I live there are a lot of places that are just an hour or two away. New York City is an hour West, Newport an hour and a half East. Endless day trips surround me and I have yet to take advantage of them. This may be my last summer at home so why not enjoy it for all it's worth. Day trips are the perfect excuse to road trip with your best friends and explore a place that you haven't spent enough time in.
3. Make that money, money, money.
The first week back from school all I wanted to do was sit on my couch and binge watch Netflix. Then, the impossible happened. On day three of binge watching I realized I was bored. All I had done in the past few days was watch two seasons of House of Cards and I was ready to do something else. Summer boredom hit me quickly, so I texted everyone that was home and tried to make plans, except the majority of plans cost money – something I didn't have. So I got a job, well, actually I got three. I figured if I wanted something to do I might as well get paid for it.
4. Hangout with your siblings.
Yeah, it sounds lame but you know you've missed them. I have two younger brothers that are pains in the butt, but I actually missed them when I was at school. There are only so many summers left where you will have endless amounts of time to hang out with and foster a relationship with your siblings. If you go and do something, chances are your parents will pay for it because they are excited you are having "sibling time."
5. Go to an amusement park.
There has to be one near you, and if there isn't, then you cross two things off your summer bucket list. An amusement park is one of the best times you can have with a group of friends. Get all your high school friends back together and go to an amusement park near you. You get to go on an insane number of rides, eat sugary and greasy food, and act like a 5-year-old. It doesn't get any better.
6. Rearrange your bedroom and unpack already!
If you are anything like me, your bedroom is currently a holding area for everything you brought home from school. My room is covered in canvases (some I made, some are from my fabulous big), clothes, shoes, winter coats that I won't be needing for another six months, and stuff that I didn't even know I had. Rearrange it so your room looks less like a storage unit and more like a bedroom for the four months that you have to live in it. This could take a few days (if you have a lot of stuff) and you can binge watch more Netflix at the same time so you aren't just doing work.
7. Go to the beach (doesn't matter if you live near one or not).
I am so incredibly lucky to live five minutes away from a beach; I know others might not have this luxury. If you are one of the not so lucky ones, make a day trip out of it! The beach is a perfect get-away and makes you feel like it really is summer. Plus, you can get rid of the pale complexion you have been rocking for the past few months. I thank Syracuse's weather for my paleness, but I know us oranges aren't alone.
8. Have a movie marathon where you watch an entire movie series.
This gives you an excuse to get all your friends together and cross something off your bucket list. I know when my friends and I get together to watch movies we generally end up talking the entire time but still it's the thought that counts. Some ideas include Harry Potter, the Fast and the Furious, Star Wars, or even The Godfather.
9. Make s'mores (why not?).
Summer = s'mores. No further explanation needed. Besides, it's an excuse for a fiery backyard bonfire!
10. Go on a road trip and visit your college friends.
I have been home for less than two weeks and I am already missing my college friends. A bunch of us are making plans to meet up because we have serious separation anxiety. It's never too soon to reunite!
So grab your friends, get in the car and GO!
