As an incoming college freshman, you have so many thoughts that are flooding into your head. You have no idea what your new reality will be; all your ideas come from what you hear from other people. You think once college starts the best years of your life are starting too. Although that may be true, there are a lot of hardships that go into your freshman year as well.
Homesickness is a very real part of the transition into college. There will be times that you want to go home and sleep in your own bed, snuggle with your dog, and have a nice hug from your mom. I’m not saying you will always feel like that, but there will be moments that you should prepare yourself for. Try not to get too wrapped up in these moments; surround yourself with good friends and it will help make your home feel a little less far away.
Going to a big school has its pluses and minuses. When I was talking to a close friend of mine I was asking her what the biggest shock to her was when entering school. Taylor said, “Sometimes you feel lonely in such a big place.” Although you have an additional 32,000 students who are walking the same campus, you have moments where you feel lonely, but don't worry, it’s only temporary.
For the first time in all of your education history, you enter into a whole new classroom. Your teachers don’t care how you do and most of them won’t even know you name; your success is in your own hands. If you want to do well in school, you have to work your butt off and make goals for yourself.
You have so much free time on your hands. Instead of being in school for seven hours a day, you could be in the classroom for two hours depending on the day. Netflix becomes your best friend. Do your research on good shows because if you’re not in class or studying, you’re going to just want to lie down and relax.
Freshman year of college is a really exciting time for students. It’s not easy, but it's definitely worth it! When things get hard, don’t feel alone because you have thousands of other students feeling the same exact way. Embrace freshman year because we only get one shot at it!
