It almost pained me to write this article because this publicity and fame is exactly what Trump desires the most. However, as the president of the United States, Trump needs to figure out how to act like a real president instead of sending his cabinet into a chaotic frenzy every time he opens his mouth. Or his Twitter account.
A real president is careful with his or her words. As president, Trump doesn’t seem to be aware that every word that comes out of his mouth in public can have lasting and devastating effects on the United States’ relations with other countries.
Whether it was calling Kim Jong-Un “rocket man” at a United Nations meeting or stating that the United States would have “no choice but to totally destroy North Korea," Trump has escalated tensions in the already strained relationship with North Korea. The last thing this world needs is the possibility of a nuclear war between the most economically powerful and the most isolated country in the world.
A real president does not berate others on Twitter at three in the morning. Name calling, undermining the credibility of prominent news sources, and complimenting himself on his own greatness seem to be more important to Trump than his actual duties as president. Whether it’s calling Meryl Streep overrated or disrespecting women in every way possible, Trump spends way too much time concerned about his own image rather than the country.
How is it that in 2017, the president of the United States can make fun of a disabled reporter, attack the intelligence of multiple talk show hosts, and insult women’s appearances without feeling any sort of shame? We have a president who prides himself in cutting back environmental regulations that were attempting to slow global warming because he is somehow convinced that this issue was a Chinese hoax.
As if humans could control the weather.
We have a president who discredits historically credible news sources like NBC and CNN just because they do not align with his views. Based on his retweets on his twitter, he prides himself in the fact that civilian trust in the media has drastically dropped since he started his presidential campaign.
A unified country is built on trust, yet Trump thrives on breaking down that trust between the news and the people. As a president, he needs to realize that denial of any news source that doesn’t fall at his feet praising him will only harm the country in the long run and create a defined division within the US. In fact, that divide has only been strengthening with Trump’s adherence to sharing news on Twitter only from incredibly right-wing news media sources.
Creating an “us versus them” mentality against Democrats with tweets like “Health Insurance stocks, which have gone through the roof during the ObamaCare years, plunged yesterday after I ended their Dems windfall!” only divides the nation even further.
Perhaps the most ridiculous thing about this presidency is Trump’s unfamiliarity with the way politics functions. Trump needs to learn that being the president does not mean being able to do whatever he wants. Just because he wants to build a wall that does not mean he will be able to build one. Just because he does not approve of the UN approved deal with Iran, that does not mean he can kill the deal himself.
The government simply does not work that way, and Trump does not seem to realize that. The presidency is the highest office in politics, yet we have a president who doesn’t even know that the US Virgin Islands are part of the US.
Please, President Trump. Educate yourself a little. Instead of giving out alliterative nicknames to people you don’t like on Twitter, focus on what’s actually important to the American people.
