I have only been in the modeling world for a short time, but in that short time I have learned so much. From my experience in photoshoots, runways, and event planning here’s the top eight things I learned from modeling!
1. No matter what size you are, you can work it!
Tall or short, skinny or curvy, there is a spot for you somewhere in the industry. Yes there is a stereotype that models are supposed to be unhealthily thin and insanely tall. Although this is true for some parts of the industry, from my experience the industry is starting to open up to all kinds of bodies. Do not let your width or height keep you from pursuing your dream!
2. Confidence is key.
Whatever facet of modeling you are pursing, it is important to have a confidence about you. Confidence is sexy, and confidence is what makes a regular person sitting into a model posing for dear life. Before modeling, my confidence was fairly low, and it was hard for me to enjoy taking photos. Now I know that whatever pose I decide to do, I will look good as long as I believe I do.
3. Networking! Networking! Networking!
Networking is key in the modeling world. You need to know the right people that can help you find more opportunities that are best suited to you. Rock the opportunities you have, and don't be afraid to put yourself out there and add onto your network!
4. You are your brand!
Modeling isn't just about being a pretty face. Personality is an important determining factor in whether or not you will land that job. Don’t sell yourself short or try to be someone that you’re not, because being yourself is the best thing you can be in the modeling industry. As a model, it is important to know what makes you stand out. Know what your brand is and promote it. Live your brand.
5. Balance your time wisely.
The worst thing you can do is oversleep a photoshoot. Always have alarms (and back-up alarms) ready, and go to sleep early! Grouchy tiredness does not make a good photoshoot, nor does it make a happy model.
6. It’s okay to not fit in.
Some people are your people, and some people are not your people, and that’s okay. Find the people who you mesh with and keep the relationship going!
7. Saying No Is Okay.
Although it is good to use every opportunity that you can, do not put yourself into situations where you are uncomfortable. Don’t be afraid to say no to photoshoots or shows that require you to do things that do not align with your values.
8. Stress is not an accessory.
Stress is going to come about no matter what you decide to do in life. As someone with anxiety, stress is definitely an issue that I manage daily not just in my job, but throughout my life. The most important thing to do is to know how much you can handle, and do not exceed that. Don’t be afraid to admit that you need a break. Everyone has a limit, and it’s okay to know it and adhere to it. Stress is not an accessory, so don't bring it with you to a job.
