Top 3 Pet Peeves For Artists

Artists have a lot to do, but that doesn't mean they don't get annoyed at some things.

I've been drawing for forever, since I could pick up a crayon according to my mom. Over the years of drawing, I've found that there are three continuous things that will make any artist's day go downhill in a hurry if they can't get it right. Same for me.

So here are artist's top three pet peeves.

1. The Other Eye

Just thinking about this is making me twitch. This is one that will especially kill us when we first started out drawing. No matter which one you start with, the other eye is always the hardest to do! It's like you somehow can't get it to flip so it's the exact same shape and if you have 'eyeliner' on it, then sometimes the width of the line is hard to get the same as well. It's a nightmare all wrapped into a tiny part that could make or break your drawing. I think that's why a lot of us put hair over the other eye, because then we don't have to draw it!

2. Hands and Feet

Drawing hands for me isn't nearly as bad as having to draw feet, but I used to struggle with hands as well. There's just something about them that give us artist's anxiety, probably because every person in the world can tell what a good hand will look at since they've seen hands probably their whole lives. Same with feet. And the other thing that comes to drawing hands and feet is getting both hands and both feet to look the same. Just like with the eye, it's hard to make sure that they both look the same, so that one isn't too much bigger or smaller than the other. When creating hands and feet, there will always be a lot of erase marks, especially when first trying to draw them. It just ends up taking a lot of practice to draw hands and feet.

3. Can you draw me?

Uhm, what? I know it's pretty cool if someone can draw you, but this is almost my biggest pet peeve when I'm drawing. I could draw you, but the thing is that I probably won't because portraits are harder than probably whatever else I'm drawing at the moment. Artist's can also be temperamental, at least me, so sometimes I can have a really easy time drawing a tree but the next day I can't. So maybe when you ask us to draw you, we won't be able to at the moment because we're focused on drawing something we can do very well at the moment instead of something that is harder for us to do. It's weird, but I know it happens, at least to me. But being asked to draw someone can be a bit annoying, and honestly I don't get why it annoys me. Eh.

Now, I know these are at least my top three pet peeves as an artist. There are a million other things out there that could probably be added to this list, but I figured it'd be easier to narrow it down to a couple. The first two are especially annoying, and the third I think is just a part of being an artist and people knowing you're one. It happens!

But can any of my other artists agree with these for sure? If not, what is your biggest pet peeve?

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
