- To Write Love on Her Arms' Vision
In 2006, Jamie Tworkowski began a non-profit organization that not only changed his life but has also changed the lives of people whom he has never met. This organization began with a story called To Write Love On Her Arms, a story that Jamie wrote about five days that he and his friends spent with a nineteen-year-old girl named Renee Yohe.
Renee was struggling with self-harm, depression, addiction and an eating disorder. During those five days, Jamie watched Renee kick her habits so that she could enter a treatment facility. He wanted to share Renee’s story with the world, so everyone could be aware of the struggles she was going through. After posting this story online, he was flooded with love from around the world. The response he got from his story motivated him to create an organization that would provide help to those who were struggling with issues like Renee. Ten years have passed, and his organization has raised awareness, money and people's spirits.
Ten years later and To Write Love On Her Arms has become a movement of love.
The world needed an organization that was ready to step up and have the conversation that many people were brushing under the rug. A conversation about mental health issues that most people were ashamed to admit they were struggling with. People were running away from these conversations while Jamie was getting ready to face them.
After creating t-shirts, posters, and awareness online, Jamie was ready to take his organization to a bigger stage: The Vans Warped Tour. Year after year the team at TWLOHA has set up their tents at the festival, and reached out to the many supporters who express their admiration for the organization. Since joining Warped Tour, TWLOHA has gained support from hundreds of musicians, such as All Time Low, Switchfoot and Paramore.
TWLOHA is much more than a non-profit organization, though. It is a movement that is helping many people — young and old — find hope. A movement that is teaching people how to love themselves. A movement that is proving to people that their story is not over yet. This organization has been around for ten years, and with the amount of love it's supporters have for it, we can expect it to stay around for at least another ten more.
