Dear high school senior,
I was in your shoes a year ago, you have your dream school picked out, you have your major all planned, and you know how your life will turn out. Well, I have a news flash for you, it will all change at least once within the next year.
When I was applying to schools and universities, my game plan was I will go to Texas A&M, I will be an Industrial Engineer, and I will go do management work like my dad.
Well, let's flash forward a year. I am sitting in West Lafayette, Indiana at Purdue University, I am a Supply Chain, Information, and Analytics major with a minor in Political Science, and I have NO idea on what my future holds.
The concept I have trouble accepting is that not knowing is perfectly okay. I have always been a planner, thank you mother, and so the thought of not knowing what I will be doing even in 4 years terrifies me.
The need for certainty is something that many people search for, but what college will teach you is that nothing is definite. From something dumb like weekend plans to what degree you'll graduate with.
So high school senior you may think you know what you want, but in reality, you don't. The person you'll be in a year is someone totally different than who you are right now, but that is how life works. The amount you'll change in the first few weeks of college is drastic.
Some days you'll wake up and not even know why you are where you are. Trust me when I say that you will eventually figure it out. I know I have yet to do that, but millions of people before us have been in our situation before us. You are not alone.
