Let's Take Another Look at Dating Etiquette

To the Guy Who Stood Her Up

He arranged to go on a date with a lovely lady. Good for him. He gets points for being proactive and arranging the date ahead of time. But he lost all those points when he decided not to show up for said date. And his point-value descends into the negatives when he decides not to even cancel the date yourself, or answer his phone when his date calls AN HOUR AFTER THE DATE WAS SUPPOSED TO START. There are very few things that excuse such behavior — death, health/safety problems, and serious family or friend issues. And readers, even if you’re sick, chances are you still have the energy to send a text explaining your situation. So when planning a date, if you aren’t dead, in a hospital, bed-ridden, or helping a loved one in need, standing someone up is absolutely inexcusable. Here are the big reasons:

Did no one ever teach you basic human courtesy? If you make plans, keep them. Show up, and show up on time. If for some very good reason you can no longer make it to said plans, at least have the decency to let the other person know. Not only did you cancel on a great girl, you didn’t have the manners to let her know.

By not having manners, or perhaps not using the manners you were raised with, you showed a lack of respect for your date. She is a human being with feelings. And not only does she have feelings, she has a busy life full of other sh*t to do besides wait on you. Think about this the next time you decide you don't want to go out.

Are you 12? Honestly, I know 12 year olds who would have handled this situation better. You and your date are both adults, so please, do everyone a favor and act like it. It’s not that hard to pick up the phone and call. The very least you can do is send a text, which would take 30 seconds, and free up your date's night.

Your date probably took a leap of faith of some sort when she agreed to go out with you. But, you obviously couldn’t pay her the same kindness when you decided to just not show up. You didn’t take the chance to get to know her, or give her a chance to get to know you.

You have no idea what you missed out on. Your date could have been the most wonderful person on the planet, but now you'll never know.

Thankfully, your date doesn’t need you in order to feel validated in any way. This was merely a blip on her radar, and will have no long-term effect. But no one is done any favors when standing someone up, or being stood up. In the end, you’re selling yourself, and your date, short.Get yourself together, and sort out your priorities. Being stood up is a sh*tty feeling, one I’m sure you yourself do not wish to experience. So when it comes to dating, don't make plans you don't intend to keep. Learn some manners, and please, for the sake of us all, use them.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
